This is according to the annual, mandatory study on the airport’s noise impact conducted by the Dutch firm To70.

That represents a 2,5% increase compared to 2024. And whether by coincidence or not, the number of nighttime flight movements to and from Brussels Airport between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. rose by 2,1% over the course of a year.

Another striking figure: the number of residents who experience a noise peak of 70 dB at least once a night – equivalent to the sound of a vacuum cleaner one meter away or a lawnmower a few meters away – has risen by 36%.

Molenbeek and Koekelberg are particularly hard hit

Despite the trend toward quieter, more modern aircraft, the municipalities of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (+54%) and Koekelberg (+47%) in particular saw a striking increase in the number of people with “severe sleep disturbances,” while Jette (-35%) saw significantly fewer.

This is mainly due to shifts in runway usage. Due to a new RNP landing procedure, runway 07L was returned to service last summer. With this procedure, aircraft are already aligned with the runway from a greater distance, flying over Molenbeek and Koekelberg, whereas previously they made a left turn just before landing, over Jette.

Kafkaesque situation

Most of those “severely sleep-disturbed” – calculated around Brussels Airport using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for sleep disturbance – live in the Brussels-Capital Region anyway. There are more than 60,000 of them, or 58% of the total.

The city of Brussels (16,643), Schaerbeek (12,924), Molenbeek-Sint-Jean (10,596), and Evere (7,039) are the hardest-hit municipalities on the list. Next are the Flemish Brabant municipalities of Zaventem (6,770) and Vilvoorde (5,482).

It also immediately highlights the difficult dilemma – or the almost Kafkaesque situation – surrounding the airport: the most severe health impacts affect the residents of the region who have the least say in matters concerning the airport.

Flanders is, in fact, the majority shareholder and issues the environmental permit, which imposed a cap on flight movements but was upheld in July 2025 by the Council for Permit Disputes. It also determines the preferred runway usage, with runway 25R as the primary departure runway, directing noise pollution westward toward Brussels.

While the Brussels-Capital Region may bear the greatest health impact, it has no authority to issue permits. The region does have its own noise standards, which are stricter than those of Flanders, but it can hardly enforce them on aircraft flying over its territory, while the federal government has the final say on aviation regulations and the nighttime flight ban policy.

New chairman

In short, it is the perfect breeding ground for community tensions. It therefore remains to be seen how the new chairman of Brussels Airport will tackle or steer these issues. According to the business newspaper De Tijd, the Flemish government has put forward former N-VA vice chairman Lorin Parys, CEO of the Pro League (Belgium’s professional soccer league), for the position.

Not only has the Brussels-Capital Region initiated an annulment procedure against the airport’s expansion, but a few days ago, Brussels State Secretary for the Environment, Ans Persoons (Vooruit), also criticized the fact that the public inquiry regarding Brussels Airport’s environmental permit, conducted through the Flemish government, was held exclusively in Dutch.

Legally, this is perfectly acceptable, but French-speaking Brussels residents feel deliberately excluded from the consultation process, even though the impact of overflying aircraft on their quality of life is significant.

Persoon’s criticism in Bruzz is sharp: “We note that Flanders does make an effort in the context of the Balanced Approach for the airport, or the work on the Ring Road. There, participants could obtain information in French or English and express themselves in French through simultaneous translation.”

In other words, when it suits Flanders politically, it suddenly finds a multilingual way of working.

A petition by the action groups Stop au survol de Bruxelles Nord-Ouest & RNP 07L and Free Air Brussels North has now been signed more than 11,000 times.

A total of 104,298 people living in the wider vicinity of Brussels Airport have their sleep severely disrupted by aircraft taking off and landing.
