BYD is bringing plug-in hybrid technology to the B-segment, a class that until now has been bypassed or abandoned by car makers.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Dolphin G DM-i aims squarely at Europe’s B-segment. Not only is this the first model BYD has developed specifically for overseas markets, but it is also the only PHEV currently on sale in the European B-segment.<\/p>\n

Filling a gap<\/h4>\n

The B-segment is the heart of the European car market, yet no mainstream manufacturer currently sells a plug-in hybrid in this class. Renault discontinued the Captur PHEV, citing cost constraints, opting instead for the simpler full-hybrid variant. Toyota, Volkswagen, and others have stayed with self-charging or mild-hybrid powertrains at this size.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, BYD\u2019s move is not just a product launch; the brand is filling a gap for which the need remains unconfirmed. It comes down to price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dimension-wise (4,160 mm long and 1,825 mm wide), the Dolphin G DM-i sits directly alongside the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, and Renault Clio. Despite its name, the model features its own styling, with small headlights, an active front air intake, and an overall generic feel. It can seat five people, but interior pictures haven\u2019t been released yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 1,000 km range<\/h4>\n

For BYD, the electrified powertrain makes a lot of sense. Though largely known as a BEV and battery manufacturer, the company derives the majority of its European sales from combustion-engined models. The Dolphin G DM-i uses its proprietary Super Hybrid DM-i technology, which favors electric driving under most conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DM-i uses a front-mounted electric motor, and BYD confirms that the Dolphin reaches a combined WLTP range of more than 1,000 km on a full battery and a full tank. The final technical specifications and trim levels will be published at an official launch event next month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But given the shared platform architecture with the Atto 2 DM-i, a similar drivetrain is to be expected: a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine acting as a generator, paired with a 145 kW front electric motor, with a choice between a 7.8 kWh battery (around 40 km electric range) and an 18 kWh pack (around 90 km).<\/p>\n

Built in Hungary?<\/h4>\n

A key element that defines BYD’s PHEV strategy is the EU tariff framework. While BYD’s battery-electric models carry a 17% supplementary import duty on top of the standard 10%, plug-in hybrids from China are not subject to the punitive measures.<\/p>\n

But according to CarNewsChina, the Dolphin G DM-i is also a strong candidate for assembly at BYD’s European plant in Szeged, Hungary. A surprising decision from a powertrain point of view, as that factory seeks to avoid the tariffs that don\u2019t apply to the Dolphin as a PHEV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Competitors like Renault have tried to woo customers in the B-segment with electrified petrol engines, but to no avail due to pricing disadvantages. There\u2019s no price ticket on the Dolphin DM-i yet, so to guarantee success, BYD will need to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of its Chinese ecosystem.<\/p>\n
