As a result, departing passengers will no longer have to remove liquids and electronics, such as laptops, from their carry-on luggage.

Thanks to the new scanners, liquids will also be allowed in unlimited quantities in packaging of up to 2 liters. Currently, passengers are allowed to carry a maximum of 1 liter of liquids in packaging of up to 100 ml.

19 passenger lanes equipped with new scanners

An initial test with a body scanner will take place as early as June, and starting next year, the airport will first set up an additional temporary screening platform equipped with the new body scanner for passengers and advanced CT scanners for carry-on luggage, which produce highly detailed 3D images of the contents, allowing liquids and electronics to remain in the bag. The first scanners will then be put into service in 2028.

Once the additional capacity is operational, the current security screening equipment will be replaced in phases, ensuring that sufficient capacity always remains available. By 2029, the entire departure security screening area is scheduled to be upgraded with 19 passenger lanes equipped with new scanners. In a later phase, new scanners for transferring passengers will follow.

Long wait times at border control

“The safety of our passengers and employees is always our top priority,” says CEO Arnaud Feist. “With this new technology, we not only continue to ensure safety, but we also make the security screening process smoother and simpler for our passengers. At the same time, the new scanners allow us to increase capacity, so we are prepared for the growth in passenger numbers in the coming years.”

The new CT scanners and body scanners are partly a response to the crowds at security checkpoints. Since travelers no longer have to remove laptops and liquids from their bags, each individual check goes faster, improving the flow of traffic.

However, the sometimes long wait times at Brussels Airport, which have been the subject of much recent discussion, are not at the security checkpoint but at the border control, a federal responsibility, and the new scanners do not help with that. During recent peak periods, travelers had to wait more than two hours on departure and up to three hours on arrival, causing hundreds of passengers to miss their flights.

According to Flanders, the largest individual shareholder in the airport operator, this is due to a structural capacity problem within the federal police, combined with new European control systems such as the Entry/Exit System (EES). Minister of the Interior Bernard Quinten (MR), on the other hand, points to an infrastructure problem.

In any case, the Flemish government has asked the federal government to submit a concrete, time-bound action plan by June 30 at the latest. The minister has also established a working group to further develop solutions.

Starting in 2028, new scanners will be installed at the security checkpoint at Brussels Airport.
