Febiac also reports that the professional market is reviving and is now slightly larger than the market for individual buyers, where the influence of the Brussels Motor Show is slowing, and where a growing number of people seem worried about geopolitical developments and rising prices.<\/p>\n
That may also partly explain why BEVs continue their upward trend and now represent 37.4% of the market, or nearly two-fifths. The fact that the professional sector is reviving may also be deduced from the slight increase in diesel car sales. Petrol cars are shrinking further to 41.1%, meaning there are now almost as many electric cars sold on the Belux market as petrol cars. Hybrid cars remain at almost the same level.<\/p>\n

The motorized two-wheelers are (again) doing well in May, 5.9% more registrations than last year. Compared with last year, registrations are 14.6% higher in the first 5 months and 3.3% higher than the same period in 2024, a very good year.<\/p>\n

Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) note a decline of 15.6% in May, and 6.3% year-to-date. Heavy trucks up to 16 tons saw a 11% sales decline in May and 32.2% cumulatively; trucks over 16 tons saw 9.3% fewer sales in May and 10.5% year-to-date.<\/p>\n

Cars by make<\/p>\n
With a 7.1% increase in sales compared to May 2025, BMW strengthens its leading position in the Belux market. Volkswagen stays number two but saw sales decline sharply (-24.7%). Peugeot is number three and comes closer to Volkswagen, despite 4.6% sales decline.<\/p>\n
Fourth is Audi, despite an 11.1% sales decline; fifth is Mercedes, which also saw its sales shrink by 15.2%. In sixth place, we find Dacia, despite a significant 31.5% sales decrease. The mother company, Renault, is seventh and had a 5% sales decline. Then come Skoda (+19.4% in sales), Volvo (-11%), and Kia, which closes the top ten (+2%).<\/p>\n
Toyota has tumbled to 11th place due to a 25.2% sales decline, while Tesla has climbed back to 12th place thanks to a 74.6% sales increase. Citro\u00ebn is 13th, the first Chinese brand comes in 14th: MG sold 211.3% more cars than in May last year. Other Chinese brands that are doing well: BYD (20th, +75.5%), Leapmotor (21st, +620.7%!),\u00a0 Jaecoo (28th, +170%), XPeng (30th, +53.1%), Omoda (33rd, +391.2%), Smart (39th, +83.3%). Only Polestar (31st, -27.4%) had a sales decline among the Chinese makes.<\/p>\n
Other serious winners were Opel (16th, +29.1%), Fiat (19th, +83%), Suzuki (22nd, ++37.7%), and Jeep (23rd, +52%). On the seriously losing side, we noticed Ford (17th, -24.9%), Nissan (25th, -55.5%), Cupra (26th, -25.3%), Land Rover (29th, -48.7%), and, once again, Porsche (32nd, -55.6%) and Lexus (37th, -53.9%).<\/p>\n
Cumulated for the first 5 months<\/p>\n
To have a less momentous ranking, it’s good to look at the year-to-date cumulated registrations (January through May). Despite an overall sales decrease of 9.1%, BMW remains in the lead with 10.9% market share. Volkswagen (-11% in sales) is second with an 8.8% market share. Mercedes also lost 9.9% in sales and is in a close battle for third place with Audi, with 6.9% and 6.8% market share, respectively. Fifth is Peugeot, reaching a 6.7% market share.<\/p>\n
At places six and seven, we see Renault and Dacia again. Here, the mother is ahead of the daughter: 6% market share for Renault, 5.2% for Dacia (down from 6.5% last year). Skoda climbed to eighth place with a 4.7% market share (up from 3.9%). Toyota is ninth with a 4.2% market share, and Kia is number ten with 3.6%.<\/p>\n
Also noticeable: Tesla has gained importance again and is now 13th with 3.1% market share compared to 2.2% last year. A few years ago, it was more than 4.5%. The Chinese are steadily coming forward: MG is 18th with almost 2% market share (up from 0.9% last year), and BYD is 19th with 1.5% (up from 0.7 last year). Leapmotor (26th) increased its market share from 0.1 to 0.6%. XPeng, Omoda, and Jaecoo also made significant strides.<\/p>\n
Brands that are falling back significantly are Nissan (1.3% market share), Seat (0.6%), Land Rover (0.6%), and Porsche (0.5%). Non-Chinese brands that are doing well below the top ten are Citro\u00ebn (3% market share), Mini (2%), Fiat (1.2%), Mazda (0.9%), Jeep (0.7%), Honda (0.5%), and KG Mobility (0.4% almost).<\/p>\n
