China’s rapid shift to electric and other new-energy vehicles reduced urban air pollution enough to prevent an estimated 262,000 premature deaths, according to a new peer-reviewed study published in Nature Health.<\/p>\n
The study’s researchers, published in May, compared actual pollution levels to a counterfactual scenario in which every vehicle on the road still ran on an internal combustion engine.<\/p>\n
By 2023, the spread of new energy vehicles (NEVs) \u2013 a category that includes battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles \u2013 was linked to a 23.80% reduction in fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a drop of 8.97 micrograms per cubic meter. Carbon monoxide fell even further, down 30.67%.<\/p>\n
Nitrogen dioxide, on the other hand, dropped by only 1.81 micrograms per cubic meter, and reductions in coarser particulate matter were also low. The authors point to a clear culprit: heavy-duty diesel trucks, which remain largely un-electrified and are a major source of NO2 and coarse particles.<\/p>\n
The researchers estimate that those air-quality improvements prevented roughly 262,000 non-accidental deaths and about 75,000 all-cause deaths.<\/p>\n
The benefits were concentrated in China\u2019s wealthier, more economically developed cities, where NEV adoption has been fastest. Less-developed regions saw smaller gains.<\/p>\n
Long-term exposure to PM2.5 and other pollutants is tied to stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory illness.<\/p>\n
According to the researchers, China needs to accelerate the electrification of heavy-duty diesel vehicles and expand new-energy vehicle deployment into lower-income regions.<\/p>\n
The effect isn\u2019t unique to China. A separate study published in January 2026 in The Lancet Planetary Health, led by a University of Southern California team, found that California\u2019s adoption of zero-emission vehicles is measurably improving air quality.<\/p>\n
China reached close to\u00a055% electric-car sales share in 2025, while the EU was still far lower: ACEA says battery-electric cars were\u00a019.7% of EU new-car registrations in January-April 2026, with plug-in hybrids at\u00a09.6%.<\/p>\n
That means Europe has less \u201calready banked\u201d air-quality benefit than China, but more upside still available.<\/p>\n
Transport remains the EU\u2019s largest source of NOx emissions. Europe also still had 182,000 PM2.5-attributable premature deaths in 2023, even after major progress since 2005.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
