More importantly, the comparison becomes less flattering once fully electric pickups with high-output vehicle-to-load capability enter the picture.<\/p>\n<h4>Up to 6.9 kW<\/h4>\n<p>The Ranger PHEV\u2019s Pro Power Onboard system can supply up to 6.9 kW through outlets in the load bed, enough for many professional tools, lighting, refrigeration, or event equipment.Ford tested it against an unspecified &#8216;typical&#8217; 4 kW petrol generator at its Dunton engineering center in the UK, with both systems supplying a 4 kW load.<\/p>\n<p>Ford says the generator emitted about 15 times as much nitrogen oxides at low loads and &#8220;more than 9,000 times more&#8221; at higher loads.\u00a0Carbon monoxide emissions were said to be more than 450 times higher on average, while hydrocarbons were also substantially lower from the Ranger.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is credible. A modern road vehicle has sophisticated exhaust after-treatment and a catalyst designed to clean up CO, hydrocarbons, and NOx, whereas portable generators are subject to a different, generally less stringent, emissions regime.<\/p>\n<h4>Which generator?<\/h4>\n<p>Yet Ford\u2019s biggest numbers should not be taken as a universal verdict on every petrol generator. The company does not identify the generator used, its age, emissions certification, fuel consumption, maintenance condition, or exact emissions results in grams per kilowatt-hour.<\/p>\n<p>Ford assumes that a 4 kW generator consumes 3.44 liters of petrol per hour. That may reflect a basic open-frame generator working hard, but it is not necessarily representative of all modern machines.<\/p>\n<p>Honda\u2019s EU70is inverter generator, for example, lists consumption of 2.5 liters per hour at 75% load, or roughly 4.1 kW, materially below Ford\u2019s reference figure. The Ranger\u2019s claimed cost advantage, therefore, depends heavily on the type and efficiency of the generator being replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Ford gives no absolute Ranger figure, but says a warm Ranger PHEV with an empty battery uses about half as much, implying roughly 1.72 L\/h. That would even undercut Honda\u2019s EU70is.<\/p>\n<p>A ratio such as 9,000 to 1 can arise when a warmed-up vehicle catalyst reduces one pollutant to almost zero. That makes for an impressive figure, but it does not mean the Ranger is 9,000 times cleaner in every meaningful environmental sense.<\/p>\n<p>Ford itself acknowledges an important caveat on CO2. During the first minutes after a cold start, the Ranger emits more CO2 than the generator at the same load.<\/p>\n<h4>Only when warmed up<\/h4>\n<p>Only when its gasoline engine and exhaust system have warmed up does Ford say the balance swings in the PHEV\u2019s favor, especially above a 2 kW demand. The study measures tailpipe pollutants at the point of use, not the full climate impact of producing fuel, generating electricity, or manufacturing the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The running-cost claim deserves similar caution. Ford assumes a 4 kW generator consumes 3.44 liters of petrol per hour, at a price of \u20ac0.371 per kWh for electricity in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>That may represent a basic open-frame generator working hard, but it may not represent every modern inverter generator. Ford says the Ranger can cut fuel use by around half with a warm engine and reduce energy costs to roughly one-third when it can draw from a charged battery. Those figures will depend heavily on load, electricity price, battery state, and how long the equipment runs.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a fundamental limitation. The Ranger\u2019s 11.8 kWh battery can initially provide silent electricity, but a sustained 4 kW demand will eventually require the 2.3-liter petrol engine to start and maintain charge.<\/p>\n<h4>Not zero-emission<\/h4>\n<p>The Ranger is therefore not a zero-emission mobile power source during a full workday. It is better seen as a cleaner, integrated alternative to carrying a separate generator and fuel cans. That distinction becomes sharper beside a fully electric pick-up. Most passenger EVs and electric vans offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) output of roughly 2.3 to 3.6 kW.<\/p>\n<p>That is useful for hand tools, lighting, battery chargers, and small appliances, but not always enough to replace a generator on a demanding worksite.<\/p>\n<p>The Maxus eTERRON 9 is a notable exception. The all-electric pickup has a 102 kWh battery, several 2.2 kW outlets, and a dedicated external V2L connection rated at 6.6 kW. That is almost identical to the Ranger PHEV\u2019s 6.9 kW output, but without local exhaust emissions, engine noise, or the need to burn petrol once its battery has been charged.<\/p>\n<p>Maxus also quotes a WLTP range of up to 430 km, although sustained high-power export naturally reduces the energy available for driving.<\/p>\n<h4>F-150 Lightning up to 9.6 kW<\/h4>\n<p>Ford itself once offered an even more powerful battery-electric benchmark in the United States. The F-150 Lightning supplied up to 9.6 kW through Pro Power Onboard, but Ford ended production of the pure-electric model late last year.\u00a0That is enough to function as a serious mobile power source or emergency home backup system, while drawing from a far larger traction battery than the Ranger PHEV.<\/p>\n<p>Its successor will retain the Lightning name but adopt an extended-range electric powertrain with an onboard petrol generator.\u00a0The F-150 Lightning was not officially sold in Belgium or Luxembourg, however.
