{"id":189517,"date":"2026-07-10T12:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T10:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=189517"},"modified":"2026-07-10T11:46:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T09:46:56","slug":"dutch-giga-storage-to-invest-700-million-in-belgiums-largest-battery-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/en\/2026\/07\/10\/dutch-giga-storage-to-invest-700-million-in-belgiums-largest-battery-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch Giga Storage to invest 700 million in Belgium&#8217;s largest battery park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Dutch company\u00a0<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Giga Storage has secured almost \u20ac700 million in financing to construct Europe\u2019s largest battery park in Dilsen-Stokkem (Belgium) \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">3.5 times the size of the current record-holder, the battery park Engie commissioned in Vilvoorde late last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">The &#8216;Green Turtle&#8217;, as the gigantic project will be called, <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">is intended\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">to store enormous quantities of electricity during periods of oversupply for later in the evening, when the sun isn&#8217;t shining, and the wind isn&#8217;t blowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>385,000 families<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">The new battery park <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">will consist of rows of 640 large battery containers, connected to the Elia high-voltage grid, with a total <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">storage capacity of 2,800 MWh and a capacity of <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">700 megawatts when fully charged.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">At peak times, the facility can supply electricity equivalent to the daily consumption of approximately 385,000 households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">The massive Limburg park will be built on a strategic spot: the former site of a zinc plant, ideally located next to a high-voltage substation operated by Elia, <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">the operator of the Belgian high-voltage grid. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Initially, there were plans to build a large gas-fired power plant on the 12.5-hectare site, but Giga Storage ultimately purchased the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Heatwaves<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Funding for the park in Dilsen-Stokkem includes \u20ac450 million from an international consortium of banks: Belfius, ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank, Triodos, HCOB, Santander, and SMBC. The remainder consists of equity provided by Giga Storage shareholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">The recent <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/en\/2026\/07\/09\/june-2026-was-hottest-june-on-record-for-western-europe\/\">heatwaves<\/a> highlighted just how critical the situation in the electricity market is. The massive use of <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">air conditioning units drove up energy consumption, and electricity prices in Belgium reached their <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/en\/2026\/06\/23\/heat-pushes-electricity-prices-to-highest-levels-in-years\/\">highest levels in years<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In the wholesale electricity market, 658.09 euros per megawatt-hour had to be paid \u2013 it had not been this expensive since December 2022. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Conversely, extremely negative prices were recorded \u2013 dropping as low as 500 euros below zero in May \u2013 when there was a surplus of solar power during the day.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Batteries can prevent curtailment of wind and solar energy production when there is a surplus. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Price fluctuations<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In just a few years, battery parks have come to play a crucial role in the electricity grid. With the increasing share of renewable generation, electricity supply and demand are increasingly diverging, leading to significant price fluctuations in the wholesale market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Dunon, CEO of Elia Transmission Belgium: \u201cAt Elia, we see every day how the energy transition pushes the demand for electricity. To enable this further electrification, we need more grid infrastructure, flexibility, and storage capacity. Batteries are indispensable in this regard. They support the integration of renewable energy, help maintain grid balance, and strengthen security of supply.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">This way, we can eventually move away from foreign fossil energy sources, ensuring that our future energy supply is reliable and affordable for both residents and industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Giga Storage<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Giga Storage was founded in 2018 and currently has 50 employees. The company aims <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">to have 2,000 megawatts of battery parks operational in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany by 2030. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Giga Storage&#8217;s projects <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">store sustainably generated electricity and feed it back into the grid when demand is highest.
