At the same time, AMG is showcasing the 500 kW electric CLA 45, a far more extreme interpretation of the same transition.

Together, the two models reveal the breadth of Mercedes’ EV strategy: one is a core-volume saloon designed around efficiency, range, and lower production costs, while the other is a high-performance halo car built to preserve AMG’s emotional appeal.

Much lower cost

The C-Class production launch is therefore more than the arrival of another battery model. It shows how Mercedes intends to combine a new generation of electric cars with a much lower-cost European manufacturing base.

The company has invested around €1 billion in Kecskemét, adding new body and assembly halls, a second press shop, a paint shop, and local battery assembly. The factory site has more than doubled from 200 to 440 hectares and is expected to build around 350,000 vehicles annually, with a potential capacity of up to 400,000.

That would make Kecskemét Mercedes’ largest car plant in Europe and one of the biggest in its global network. The electric C-Class joins the A-Class and electric GLB, while the factory is also being prepared for other models, including the electric GLC and the future compact G-Class.

Cost benchmark

Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius described Kecskemét as the European benchmark for factory costs, saying the plant proves that top Mercedes quality and cost efficiency can go hand in hand. The remark is politically sensitive in Germany, where Mercedes is reducing costs and shifting a larger share of European output to lower-cost countries.

Mercedes has previously said factory-related costs in Hungary are around 70% lower than in Germany. That does not mean the complete car is 70% cheaper to produce, since batteries, electronics, steel, and bought-in components account for much of the total cost. But wages, energy, property, and operating expenses give Kecskemét a decisive advantage when allocating new models.

The factory is therefore almost as important as the car. Mercedes aims to double the share of its European production located in lower-cost countries from around 15% to 30%, while keeping its German plants open. Kecskemét is the key instrument in that balancing act.

Core of the electric range

The electric C-Class is crucial because it brings one of Mercedes’ best-known nameplates into the heart of the EV market. Rather than relying on separate EQ models such as the EQE, Mercedes is returning to familiar names and body styles.

The first C 400 4MATIC combines two motors producing 360 kW with a usable battery capacity of around 94.5 kWh. Mercedes quotes up to 762 kilometers of WLTP range and 330 kW DC charging, enough, in ideal conditions, to add about 320 kilometers in 10 minutes. Less powerful rear-wheel-drive versions are expected to achieve around 800 kilometers.

Its most obvious rival is the new BMW i3 Neue Klasse, which also brings a familiar German premium nameplate onto a dedicated 800-volt electric architecture. More importantly, it must generate meaningful electric volume in Mercedes’ Core segment, between the compact CLA family and the brand’s larger luxury cars.

AMG is at the other extreme

Only days before the Hungarian production launch, Mercedes-AMG revealed the electric CLA 45 4MATIC+ and demonstrated it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Although smaller and derived from Mercedes’ compact model family, it represents the opposite end of the strategy: a technological showcase designed to make electric performance desirable.

Three axial-flux motors, two at the rear and one at the front, provide up to 500 kW (680 metric horsepower). Mercedes quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds from a standing start, or 2.7 seconds using a one-foot rollout, and a maximum speed of 270 km/h with the AMG Dynamic Plus package.

The rear motors can control each wheel independently for torque vectoring, while the front motor can disconnect under light loads: a 94 kWh battery, 800-volt architecture, and 330 kW charging complete the package. Mercedes provisionally claims more than 670 kilometers of WLTP range for the saloon, although final homologated figures have not yet been published.

The AMG also simulates gear changes, engine sound, and seat vibrations, using recordings of the former four-cylinder CLA 45. It is an attempt to give an electric car some of the theatre that traditional AMG customers expect.

Two sides of one strategy

The two launches belong together. The C-Class and Kecskemét represent the industrial side of Mercedes’ electric transition: familiar models, high volumes, flexible production, and sharply lower costs. The AMG CLA represents the emotional side: extreme performance, proprietary motor technology, and a halo effect for the rest of the electric range.

Mercedes still faces weaker sales in China, tariff pressure in the United States, and slower-than-expected EV adoption in parts of Europe. Its answer is no longer to build more EQ models. It is to electrify its strongest existing nameplates, produce them more efficiently, and use AMG to prove that the result can still feel like a Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz has begun production of its new electric C-Class at its heavily expanded factory in Kecskemét, Hungary.
