Final global road testing is now underway, with a full presentation and detailed technical specifications promised later this year.

Unlike the more upright SUVs on which Range Rover built its reputation, the GT adopts a lower and more streamlined silhouette with pronounced coupé proportions.

Range Rover says it has been designed to combine long-distance refinement and effortless electric performance with all-terrain ability that conventional luxury grand tourers cannot offer.

The driving position will also be lower than in a traditional Range Rover, sitting somewhere between that of a saloon and an SUV. The company is reportedly benchmarking the GT not only against premium SUVs, but also against F-segment luxury cars such as the Mercedes S-Class, Porsche Panamera, and Bentley Flying Spur.

Minimalist philosophy

The interior follows a minimalist philosophy and avoids the trend for dashboard-wide displays. A tablet-sized central touchscreen is combined with a smaller digital instrument cluster, while a concealed ventilation strip runs across the dashboard.

The center console has no conventional physical buttons, although journalists who sat in a production-intent prototype said the screen was positioned within easy reach.

Woven textiles cover large parts of the fascia and conceal the audio speakers. The GT will also feature the largest panoramic glass roof yet fitted to a Range Rover.

The seats can be trimmed in Ultrafabrics, a material JLR claims is 50% lighter than leather and remains virtually new after testing designed to simulate 10 years of wear.

Four and five-seat layouts will be offered. The four-seat version adds a full-length rear console with wireless phone chargers, cupholders, USB-C connections, and a separate touchscreen for climate and media controls. Range Rover is promising class-leading rear legroom, although no dimensions have yet been released.

First on the new EMA platform

The GT will be the first Range Rover developed on JLR’s new Electrified Modular Architecture, known as EMA. Production will take place at the extensively modernized Halewood plant near Liverpool, where JLR has invested around £500 million in new body, battery, and assembly facilities.

EMA is more electric-focused than the flexible MLA platform used for the upcoming Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric, which also supports combustion and plug-in-hybrid powertrains. JLR also describes EMA as a software-defined architecture, making the GT an important step in the group’s wider technology strategy.

The car will initially be launched exclusively as a battery-electric vehicle. JLR says the architecture also offers the flexibility to add a full-hybrid version later in the model’s life, reflecting the manufacturer’s decision to retain more powertrain flexibility than originally planned.

No official figures have yet been released for battery capacity, motor output, driving range, or charging speed. The GT is nevertheless expected to use a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system and an 800-volt electrical system.

British media have suggested charging rates of up to around 350 kW. A prototype reportedly displayed 288 miles (463 kilometers) of remaining range at an 80% state of charge, but this cannot be treated as an official WLTP figure.

The commercial launch is expected in 2027. Range Rover Belgium has already added the GT to its website and is inviting customers to register for updates. Still, no Belgian prices, order date, or delivery schedule have been announced.

No link with China-built Freelander 8

The GT should not be confused with the upcoming Freelander 8, another electrified model from JLR under development and manufactured in China.

The Freelander 8 is the first model from the revived standalone brand created by Chery and JLR. The six-seat SUV will launch in China before expanding to international markets. /Chery-JLR

Freelander is part of the joint venture between JLR and Chinese manufacturer Chery. JLR has licensed the name for a separate range of vehicles based on Chery technology and built at the joint venture’s Changshu plant. JLR contributes design expertise through its Shanghai studio, while Chery supplies the underlying electrified architecture and powertrain technology.

There is therefore no confirmed technical relationship between the Range Rover GT and the Freelander 8. The GT is a British-built Range Rover based on JLR’s own EMA architecture. At the same time, the Freelander will use a Chinese platform and operate as an independent brand outside JLR’s Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar portfolio.

The Freelander 8 will also be a more conventional large SUV, while the Range Rover GT targets buyers looking for a lower, more road-oriented luxury crossover.

Freelander is expected to launch first in China, followed by an international brand presentation in Abu Dhabi in September. Reports suggest a European arrival could follow during the second half of 2027, but there is currently no confirmation for Belgium.

The two programs illustrate JLR’s parallel electrification strategy. Range Rover will continue targeting the upper end of the global luxury market with British-built models such as the GT. At the same time, Freelander gives the Chery partnership access to a broader, potentially more price-sensitive market, using technology developed in China.

Range Rover is adding an all-electric grand tourer to its line-up, creating a fifth model alongside the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, and Evoque.
