Completion is expected around the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Cellcentric will remain independent and continue supplying fuel-cell systems for heavy road and off-road vehicles, coaches, rail, marine applications, stationary power, and heavy machinery.<\/p>\n<h4>Additional fuel-cell expertise<\/h4>\n<p>Toyota\u2019s entry should give Cellcentric additional fuel-cell expertise and, perhaps more importantly, greater industrial scale. Cellcentric employs more than 560 people and holds roughly 700 patents.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, it presented the BZA375, a compact fuel-cell system developed for heavy-duty applications and intended to become one of the foundations of its future commercial offering.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance is strategically important, but it should not be interpreted as evidence that hydrogen is regaining its former position as a broad clean alternative for road transport.<\/p>\n<p>Fuel cells have largely lost that contest in passenger cars, where battery-electric vehicles have achieved far greater volumes, lower energy consumption, and a rapidly expanding charging network.<\/p>\n<h4>Mostly battery-electric trucks<\/h4>\n<p>Even in trucks, batteries are advancing faster than many hydrogen advocates expected. According to the International Energy Agency, global electric-truck sales doubled in 2025 to more than 400,000 vehicles, reaching 9% of the market.<\/p>\n<p>Battery-electric models accounted for 97% of those sales. Electric heavy-freight truck sales almost tripled to around 230,000 units.<\/p>\n<p>Europe remains far behind China, but the direction is similar. Electric-truck sales in Europe rose by 40% in 2025 to nearly 17,000 units. In the EU, electrically chargeable trucks increased their share to 4.4% in the first quarter of 2026, while fuel-cell trucks remain largely confined to trials and small fleets.<\/p>\n<p>This changes the meaning of the Toyota-Daimler-Volvo cooperation. Rather than launching hydrogen into the mainstream, the three companies are sharing the immense costs and risks of keeping it viable for the most demanding use cases.<\/p>\n<p>These could include trucks covering very high daily mileages, operations where charging time is difficult to accommodate, or applications in which very large batteries would reduce payload too much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The deal also cannot solve hydrogen\u2019s largest problem. Almost all hydrogen is still produced from fossil fuels, while low-emission hydrogen represented only slightly more than 1% of global production in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The IEA says the project pipeline is shrinking because of delays, cancellations, weak demand, and costs that remain higher than those of conventional hydrogen.<\/p>\n<h4>Belgian new perspective?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Belgian <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/en\/2025\/11\/06\/belgiums-quiet-revolution-how-a-small-solar-hydrogen-park-could-go-global\/\">startup Solhyd<\/a> could offer a new perspective. Its modular technology produces hydrogen from solar energy and moisture captured from the air, without requiring a water supply, heavy grid connection, or precious metals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Solhyd claims that its simplified system can halve balance-of-plant costs and reduce energy costs by up to a factor of 4 compared with conventional electrolysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, the breakthrough has yet to be demonstrated on a commercial scale. Solhyd does not publish a verified production cost per kilogram, while its first commercially relevant installation near Namur will initially have a capacity of only 50 kW. It is expected to start operating in 2026, with a 2 MW project planned for 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The technology could become particularly attractive for decentralized hydrogen production at industrial sites or truck depots, where it could help reduce the cost of transporting hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>But the gas is currently produced at low pressure and still has to be compressed, stored, and dispensed before it can fuel a truck. Solhyd could therefore help lower one important part of the hydrogen cost chain, but it has not yet removed the economic and infrastructural disadvantages that are allowing battery-electric trucks to gain ground.<\/p>\n<p>Cellcentric\u2019s new ownership structure is therefore both a vote of confidence and a sign of consolidation. Hydrogen has not disappeared from road transport, but its role is narrowing.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota, Daimler Truck, and Volvo Group are effectively betting that fuel cells can remain a specialized solution for the hardest-to-electrify heavy-duty applications, even as batteries claim an increasingly large share of the truck market.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toyota has signed a binding agreement to acquire a 33% stake in Cellcentric, the fuel-cell joint venture formed by Daimler Truck and Volvo Group.
