In the second quarter of this year, the Brussels-Capital\/Ixelles\/Elsene local police caught 46,610 drivers speeding. In total, from April through June, the Brussels police checked the speed of just over 11 million drivers. This means that approximately 0,4% of all drivers checked were found to be speeding.<\/p>\n

The figures confirm the upward trend in Brussels that was already observed last year: in 2025, the number of speeding violations increased by nearly 40%.<\/p>\n

Real speed demons are a small minority<\/h4>\n

3,518 speeding drivers were caught by a mobile radar check. The remaining drivers were caught through means such as average speed checks, LIDAR checks, red-light cameras, or unmanned speed cameras.<\/p>\n

The figures once again point to an upward trend. In 2025, no fewer than 739,165 speeding violations were recorded in Brussels, compared to 540,631 in 2024. That amounts to an increase of nearly 40%. Through 2021, that number had never exceeded 350,000 violations. Consequently, the number of speeding violations has doubled in just 4 years.<\/p>\n

That said, it’s not as if drivers in Brussels are suddenly hitting the pedal to the floor en masse: 61% of all speeding violations in 2025 occurred in a 30-km-per-hour zone, and 58% of the offenders were driving less than 10 kph over the limit, so these were mostly minor violations. Only 8% were driving more than 40 kph over the limit, so the real speed demons are a small minority.<\/p>\n

Clearly, one of the main reasons for such a surge in speeding violations was the introduction of the 30 kph zone across the Brussels road network, with the exception of a small number of very densely used go-through lanes.<\/p>\n

47 driver’s licenses revoked<\/h4>\n

In the second quarter of this year, 47 drivers also had their driver’s licenses revoked immediately. “That was the case for 43 drivers who had been speeding,” according to the police. “For 4 others, it was because they did not actually hold a driver’s license.”<\/p>\n

The latter sounds quite absurd, and “revocation of the right to drive” is a term that would be preferable to the typical legal jargon, but someone whose driver’s license has been revoked (even if he didn’t have one) and who drives within 15 days of the revocation will not, if caught, be prosecuted for “simply” driving without a license, but for the much more serious offense of driving in violation of a driving ban, which carries prison sentences of up to 2 years instead of a small fine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
