China just launched the largest coordinated vehicle recall in its history. More than 4.3 million cars from at least ten brands are heading back to the workshop because of the mechanical emergency release inside the cabin. Tesla is the biggest single name on the list.<\/p>\n
The use of electrically actuated flush door handles was already a thorn in the eye of the authorities, after a series of incidents where the passengers were trapped inside after an accident, often in burning or submerged vehicles. Subsequently, the country banned these door handles, making them illegal as of 1 January 2027.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But now, another safety hazard has emerged in the wake of the door-handle issue. The mechanical emergency release, often placed inside the door\u2019s storage compartment or near the floor well, must help panicking passengers escape in an emergency, but it is deemed too hard to locate or not visible enough. Car makers tend to blend these handles with the interior\u2019s design, making them as unnoticeable as possible for aesthetic\u2019s sake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Chinese regulators demand that markings be applied or other technical solutions be installed to address the issue. This forces the largest recall action in the history of the world\u2019s biggest EV market, affecting more than 4 million vehicles.<\/p>\n Tesla suffers the biggest hit and recalls 2,975,910 cars, according to filings with the State Administration for Market Regulation. The sweep covers China-built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, plus imported Model S, Model 3 and Model X examples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Tesla’s fix is a mix of old- and new-school: warning labels will show where the emergency handle sits, and after a planned OTA update, the side windows will automatically lower after a severe collision. If the door mechanism itself is jammed, an open window is an alternative escape route for occupants, next to an entry point for emergency responders.<\/p>\n But, obviously, the problem stretches beyond Tesla. Xiaomi is recalling 390,435 SU7 units. Leapmotor is calling back 371,200 cars. Xpeng sits at 264,842, Zeekr at 92,658. Chery, Dongfeng, Arcfox and FAW are also on the list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The fixes differ by brand. Xiaomi is updating the unlock logic and window control software, not just adding stickers. Leapmotor is largely relying on warning labels and a software tweak. Chery is reportedly replacing actual hardware around the mechanical release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The uncomfortable question for Europe is whether Brussels will follow. At the moment, there is no equivalent EU-wide ban on electric flush handles. Cars sold in Europe with the same clean interior layout are not subject to the Chinese recall.<\/p>\n NHTSA in the United States mentioned it is considering new safety standards for occupant entrapment during electrical failures. If the world\u2019s two biggest car markets move in the same direction, car makers will consider whether making local exceptions is worth the economics.<\/p>\n As for Tesla, one recall worry has been met by another. In a separate recall, another 2,740,642 Model 3 and Model Y units in China face an OTA over driver-attention monitoring. In automated driving some owners hang a weight on the wheel, fooling the system which relies on steering-wheel torque.<\/p>\n Tesla will now add cabin-camera monitoring on top of the torque detection, via a software update. Exactly this recall was already forced in the US three years ago.
