They never reached a higher penetration since their expansion into the EU.

It is nearly double the 5.6% they claimed in the same month last year, and it cements a trend that should worry anyone still thinking of Chinese manufacturers as marginal players.

Looking at the first half of the year, Chinese brands registered 813,096 vehicles across Europe. That already exceeds the entire calendar year of 2025, which ended 644 units lower.

MG on top

SAIC still holds the top spot among Chinese players, thanks to MG’s strong ties with the continent and the UK in particular. The group’s registrations rose by 19%.

But the real momentum sits behind it. BYD made a 146% jump, while Chery Group more than tripled its volume (201,544 units). The BYD Seal U midsize SUV was the bestselling Chinese model of the month and also Europe’s top-selling plug-in hybrid overall.

Where is that growth coming from? Well, plug-in hybrids clearly were the rocket fuel in July. Chinese-branded PHEV sales exploded by 201%, grabbing a 33.6% share of all Chinese sales. Full hybrids were up 137%.

Those powertrains currently still avoid the punitive tariffs Brussels imposed on Chinese EVs. Though the European Commission is now considering extending tariffs to PHEVs, the loophole remains wide open.

However, battery-electric models hold the largest share: 35%, up 114%. That slice of the pie is the same size as last July. Lastly, gasoline-engine offerings have collapsed to just 10% of their volume, while they were still double as high (23%) a year earlier. A shift is happening.

One in three by 2030?

But the forward-looking numbers are even more interesting. A Reuters analysis, citing Counterpoint Research, forecasts Chinese brands will seize more than 20% of Europe’s total passenger-car market by 2030. In the EV segment, that share climbs to 29%.

That is almost one in every three new electric vehicles. The forecast is not speculative, as the growth rate of Chinese brands is staggering. Barely five years ago, they held a market share of no more than 0.5%.

In the background, the sales mechanism is shifting from export to local production. According to Mobility Global, Chinese-branded production in Europe is expected to hit roughly 90,000 vehicles this year, then scale to 1 million by 2030 and reach 1.5 million annually by 2035. While incumbents are fighting overcapacity, the Chinese brands are filling the gap

Production hub Spain

The epicenter of European production clearly is Spain, with a long list of industrial projects in the making. Chery is beginning assembly of Jaecoo and Omoda models in Barcelona’s former Nissan plant this year. Leapmotor will use Stellantis’ Zaragoza facility. Geely is forming a joint venture with Ford in Valencia. SAIC’s MG brand will begin assembly in Galicia from 2028.

BYD, which is set to start production in Hungary this autumn, is increasingly likely to add a second European plant in Spain. By 2030, about half of all Chinese-brand cars built in Europe are expected to roll off the assembly lines in Spain. By 2035, that could approach two-thirds.

While this looks like the yellow invasion creating job opportunities, the underlying truth might be harsher. Analysts point to a side effect in which Europe could end up as little more than a screwdriver economy, assembling imported kits while the high-margin engineering and battery chemistry remain in Asia. It could also disrupt the supply chain, with suppliers falling into Chinese hands, accelerating a brain drain.

Growing pains

But the rapid rise of Chinese brands in the European sales charts also comes with growing pains. Earlier this month, German dealers warned of severe payment delays from brands such as BYD and Xpeng.

They accuse these car makers of using their dealer network as involuntary banks, providing them with rent-free loans. The practice, which in China led to a corrective law pushing payment deadlines to 60 days, has already prompted affected dealers to postpone further expansion plans.

Insurers, too, are putting the brakes on the accelerated expansion. In the Netherlands, insurer Univé has blacklisted nine Chinese OEMs over poor parts supply. These waiting times pose a higher-than-expected and too costly challenge to accident repairs.

Chinese brands closed in at 11.2% of the European market in July, according to figures from Dataforce.
