It can wiggle its furry tail and then ‘poop’ your package onto your porch.

The R-dog has four articulated legs with wheels at the ends, so it can roll efficiently on pavements but use its legs for curbs, steps, and stairs. Robot.com says this is intended to solve the notorious “last 100 meters” problem: conventional sidewalk robots can reach your street but often cannot reach the front door.

The R-dog’s makers claim that their robot’s ability to go up and down stairs and navigate low barriers more quickly and effectively than many of the boxier delivery ‘bots currently on the market will enable it to reach more final destinations more easily – while running ads on its screens the entire time. That makes R-dog something closer to a walking billboard that happens to deliver your parcel or takeaway.

Mobile advertising business model

What is genuinely unusual about Robot.com’s R-dog is the combination of a stair-climbing delivery robot, deliberate dog-like personality, automated doorstep drop-off and, especially, a mobile advertising business model. Robot.com doesn’t appear to see delivery fees as the robot’s only source of income.

What also sets the R-dog apart is its approachable design and ability to “hold a natural conversation” with passers-by – technology that, according to its creators, could lead to more flexible and interactive advertising campaigns.

Robots.com says the R-dog is capable of “natural voice conversations” with passers-by – technology that could lead, its makers suggest, to more flexible and interactive ad campaigns /robot.com

R-dog’s on-board cameras and sensors are therefore not just for navigating its surroundings, but also for collecting data. They’re analyzing people’s faces, counting who is engaging with the robot’s ad-playing screens, and, to some degree, performing sentiment analysis on them.

But the R-dog is still a prototype. The makers have not even finalized the cargo compartment or released meaningful payload, range, or battery specifications. Production deployment is targeted for 2027, and the robot will initially be deployed on college campuses, where the company already has considerable delivery experience. A European R-dog rollout has not been announced yet.

Similar European projects

The R-dog concept is not unique, either. In fact, Europe already has a remarkably similar robot: the wheeled-legged delivery robot from Swiss robotics company RIVR. Its RIVR ONE rolls on wheels for efficiency, uses its legs for curbs and stairs, and even has a robotic arm that can manipulate gates or place parcels at the doorstep. It carries more than 30 kg.

More importantly, it isn’t merely a concept. RIVR and Just Eat began delivering real restaurant orders in Zürich in August 2025. In February 2026, they expanded the service to Milton Keynes in the UK, where customers can actually choose autonomous robot delivery in the regular Just Eat app. The robot negotiates steps and uneven terrain and can complete an unattended doorstep delivery.

The advertising element, however, could be a commercially important difference. One of the fundamental problems with autonomous delivery is economic: saving a €5-10 courier fee doesn’t necessarily cover the cost of an expensive robot, remote supervision, maintenance, charging, and fleet management. Advertising could subsidize the delivery operation.

Other European countries are not lagging behind either. In Finland, Starship and retailer S Group have already scaled their conventional six-wheeled sidewalk robots from ten initial trials to 650+ robots serving more than 165 stores in 82 towns and cities.

They have completed one million grocery deliveries, with an average delivery time of around 22 minutes. These robots cannot climb your staircase like RIVR or R-dog, but they demonstrate that autonomous delivery in Europe has moved well beyond the experimental stage.

Belgium

In Belgium, Carrefour tested Delivers.ai sidewalk robots in Zaventem in early 2023, and subsequently put three robots – Natacha, Nono, and Loulou – onto public streets and cycle paths in Knokke that summer.

They traveled at around 6 km/h, carried up to 25 kg, and delivered Deliveroo orders within a 400-meter radius. After evaluation, the project seemed technically successful but did not generate sufficient volume to become profitable.

Also in Belgium, Colruyt’s Collect&Go recently launched an autonomous grocery-delivery pilot in Leuven running from mid-May through August 2026. This time it isn’t a little pavement robot but a small road-going electric delivery vehicle, which the company describes as Belgium’s first unmanned vehicle allowed to drive on public roads without following a fixed route. A final evaluation is not yet available.

The R-dog looks quite nice, but it certainly won’t revolutionize deliveries. However, the concept raises questions about the profitability of such unmanned deliveries.

The real unanswered question is whether doorstep robots can be cheaper and more convenient than a human courier. Robot.com’s novel answer may be to make the advertiser, rather than the customer, help pay for the robot.

America’s Robot.com is proud to present R-dog, the new delivery robot with a friendly face and WALL-E-like eyes, a red cap, and an approachable design.
