BMW is moving its hydrogen program another step closer to series production. The next-generation iX5 Hydrogen is undergoing real-world testing while prototype assembly, supplier industrialization, and production preparations are running in parallel.<\/p>\n
Technically, BMW is increasingly demonstrating that a hydrogen passenger car can work. The harder question in 2026 is whether enough customers will still want one by the time series production starts in 2028 \u2013 and where they will fill it.<\/p>\n
The forthcoming hydrogen X5 will use BMW\u2019s third-generation fuel-cell system, developed together with Toyota.<\/p>\n
BMW claims around 750 kilometers of WLTP range, hydrogen refueling in less than five minutes and performance comparable with a conventional premium SUV.<\/p>\n
Its latest tank architecture is particularly important. Instead of the bulky cylindrical installation used in earlier prototypes, BMW has developed a much flatter hydrogen storage system carrying at least 7 kg of hydrogen.<\/p>\n
That makes it easier to integrate hydrogen alongside battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel drivetrains within the same vehicle architecture.<\/p>\n
BMW is also moving beyond laboratory work. Manufacturing equipment is being installed at its Steyr powertrain plant in Austria, prototype systems are being assembled in Munich, and employees are already being trained for future series production.<\/p>\n
The industrial commitment is significant and so is the public support behind it. BMW says the German federal government is providing \u20ac191 million under the European IPCEI Hy2Move program for the development of drivetrain and tank technologies, with Bavaria contributing another \u20ac82 million.<\/p>\n
That makes the iX5 Hydrogen a \u20ac273 million public-policy experiment as much as a technological one.<\/p>\n
The timing is striking. While BMW prepares a hydrogen passenger car for the end of the decade, the European market for fuel-cell cars has almost disappeared.<\/p>\n
According to SNE Research, only 4,643 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles were sold worldwide during the first half of 2026. Hyundai dominated with 3,337 units, while Toyota sold only 306 and Honda 79.<\/p>\n
Europe registered just 14 fuel-cell vehicles during the same period. By comparison, EU registrations of battery-electric cars exceeded 1.2 million.<\/p>\n
The infrastructure picture is hardly more encouraging. H2 Mobility, operator of Germany\u2019s largest hydrogen filling network, has been closing smaller 700-bar stations while redirecting investment toward locations serving buses and commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n
That creates an awkward contradiction: BMW is industrializing a premium 700-bar passenger car while Europe\u2019s most mature hydrogen refueling network is increasingly concentrating on heavy transport.<\/p>\n
But BMW is not entirely alone. Toyota remains its closest technological partner and continues developing hydrogen passenger cars alongside commercial applications.<\/p>\n
Hyundai is perhaps the strongest independent believer: its second-generation Nexo offers more than 800 km of WLTP range and can be refueled in around five minutes.<\/p>\n
Honda is still involved too, but more cautiously. Its CR-V e:FCEV combines hydrogen with a plug-in battery, while the company is developing cheaper next-generation fuel-cell technology.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Honda has already scaled back some of its hydrogen investments as market expectations have weakened.<\/p>\n
Others have drawn much harsher conclusions. Stellantis abandoned its fuel-cell development program in 2025, arguing that hydrogen lacked a credible path toward medium-term economic sustainability.<\/p>\n
General Motors subsequently stopped development of its next-generation Hydrotec fuel cells and shifted resources toward batteries and charging.<\/p>\n
Hydrogen\u2019s fundamental disadvantage relative to batteries has not disappeared. Producing green hydrogen through electrolysis, compressing and transporting it, converting it back into electricity in a fuel cell and finally driving an electric motor requires substantially more renewable electricity than charging a battery directly.<\/p>\n
Green hydrogen itself also remains scarce and expensive. BMW\u2019s strategy is therefore perhaps better understood not as a bet that hydrogen will replace batteries, but as a bet on a future hydrogen economy.<\/p>\n
Its flexible vehicle architecture limits risk; Toyota shares part of the development burden, and public funding absorbs another portion of the cost.<\/p>\n
Most importantly, hydrogen infrastructure may still grow significantly for trucks, buses, shipping and industry. EU rules require hydrogen stations along the TEN-T core road network by 2030.<\/p>\n
If that network develops for heavy transport anyway, passenger cars such as BMW\u2019s X5 could piggyback on it. That could give hydrogen a small role for drivers who need long-range, rapid refueling or frequent towing.<\/p>\n
But that is very different from becoming a third mainstream passenger-car drivetrain alongside batteries and combustion engines.<\/p>\n
BMW has increasingly proved that a hydrogen X5 can work. By 2028, it will have to prove something considerably harder: that enough people still want to buy one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
