Electric vans are rapidly overcoming their technical shortcomings.

Beating diesel?

The harder challenge is proving that they can also beat diesel where fleet operators feel it most: total cost of ownership, uptime and day-to-day productivity. Renault previously won the award with Master, Trafic and Kangoo models.

Renault has raised the Trafic’s projected WLTP range from the previously announced 450 km to more than 470 km, with homologation still pending.

The new RGEV medium van platform uses an 800V architecture that can recover up to 280 km of range in 20 minutes. Renault claims nearly 690 km in the city, enough, it says, for some users to work for up to five days without charging.

That puts range anxiety increasingly in the background. Yet the market tells a different story. Electrically chargeable vans grew by 41.6% in the EU during the first half of 2026, but still accounted for only 13.2% of registrations. Diesel retained a dominant 79.1% share.

For professional users, a van is first and foremost a working tool. A vehicle standing still costs money, while purchase price, charging access, residual value, payload and conversion possibilities can matter more than an impressive WLTP figure.

Economics are key

Renault is therefore shifting its pitch from battery specifications to economics. It claims the new Trafic can deliver total cost of ownership up to 10% lower than a comparable combustion-engine model.

That claim still depends heavily on mileage, energy prices, financing and charging patterns, and Renault has not yet published the van’s list price — arguably the most important missing number.

Uptime is the other part of the equation. From 2027, Renault Uptimize will use connected-vehicle data to offer more personalized fleet support and aims to reduce downtime after an incident by up to 50%.

A built-in fleet-management app will also allow settings for efficiency, performance and safety to be applied automatically across selected vehicles.

That is where Trafic’s software-defined architecture begins to serve as a business tool rather than a technical showcase.

Two central computers

Around 80 electronic control units are replaced by two central computers running CAR OS, developed with Google. The setup allows remote updates and new functionality throughout the vehicle’s life.

Renault is also addressing another weak spot of electric vans: specialist conversions. It offers three routes — Converted by Renault, Qstomize and a network of 300 certified bodybuilders, including 17 in Belgium.

That should make it easier to electrify refrigerated vans, service vehicles and other specialist applications without leaving Renault’s approved ecosystem.

The fundamentals remain competitive: up to 5.8 m³ of cargo volume, 1.3 tonnes of payload, a two-tonne towing capacity, room for three Euro pallets and a low 53-cm loading sill. At 1.89 meters high, the van also remains compatible with standard underground car parks.

Five new commercial vehicles

The Trafic is only the first step in a broader offensive. Under its futuREady plan, Renault intends to launch five new commercial vehicles by 2028. It currently ranks second in Europe’s LCV market and says it has outperformed the market for four consecutive quarters.

The technology problem, then, is becoming easier to solve. The real test for the new Trafic is whether a 470-km, software-defined electric van can prove not only that it works as well as a diesel van, but that it earns its keep better.

Renault’s new Trafic Van E-Tech electric has been named International Van of the Year 2027, even before the first customer vehicles hit the road.
