The aerodynamic and \u2018production-ready\u2019 2+2 was built on the brand\u2019s MEB+ platform and promises a record-low power consumtion.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen\u2019s Mission Efficiency concept looks like a modern reinterpretation of the brand\u2019s iconic XL1. That is the front-wheel drive compact car electric platform used for the ID. Polo, among other cars.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the XL1, the new concept leans far less on exotic technologies. It uses the 99 kW (135 hp) electric motor and 54,9 kWh net capacity NMC battery found in cars like the ID. Polo.<\/p>\n<p>But to maximise its range, it relies on aerodynamic efficiency, which VW touts as being a world record for a \u2018production-ready\u2019 concept. The prototype has a EU type approval and complies with regulations on occupant protection and crash safety.<\/p>\n<h4>Three world records<\/h4>\n<p>As a matter of fact, the brand claims three world records. The first is a Cx of 0,158 \u2013 making this the most aerodynamic road-legal vehicle. The second record is a consumption of 6.48 kWh\/100 km in \u2018ideal\u2019 conditions, at a constant speed of 68 km\/h on flat surface and without using the airconditioning.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-193945\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ME_Rekordfahrt_EN-scaled.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ME_Rekordfahrt_EN-scaled.jpg?w=2560&amp;ssl=1 2560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ME_Rekordfahrt_EN-scaled.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ME_Rekordfahrt_EN-scaled.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The third record is impressive: a real-world fuel consumption of 7,51 kWh\/100 km including charging losses (6,89 kW\/100 net consumption).<\/p>\n<p>This achievement was recorded during a 1.778,36 km drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna, with an average speed of 67,72 km\/h and a top speed of 138 km\/h. The battery was recharged once and at the finish line 164 kilometers of range remained .<\/p>\n<h4><b>Aerodynamic efficiency over battery capacity<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The Mission Efficiency is 1.392 mm high, 1.744 mm wide and 4.775 mm long. This makes it 722 mm longer than the ID. Polo, mostly due to a 100 mm longer wheelbase (2.700 mm) and longer rear overhang getting narrower near the end, to give it a drop-shaped design. Exactly that aerodynamic shape is key to the record-breaking power consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Although the model\u2019s shape alone accounts for 47% of the aerodynamic efficiency, the low drag is further achieved by active cooling vents in the front, aerodynamic wheels and deflectors, a fully closed underside, encapsulated rear wheels, flush door handles and frameless door windows.<\/p>\n<p>The rear-view mirrors remain conventional, since wind tunnel tests showed replacing them by cameras would hardly have an impact. Moreover, the car features a 481 litre boot and its rear bench can be folded down to transport longer items.<\/p>\n<p>It is rather practical, although it remains a 2+2 coupe. Most of the body panels are made of a light composite using CFRP and aramid. The glass roof incorporates a 370 W solar panel capable of generating an extra range of up to 30 km a day.<\/p>\n<p>The front brakes are standard hydraulic brakes, but on the rear wheels VW has fitted electromechanical ones.
