Belgian campers continue their stride in the sales charts. After the pandemic-driven frenzy of 2020-2022, many assumed the motorhome bubble would burst. Instead, 4,283 new campervans and motorhomes were registered in the first eight months of 2026, according to industry federation Traxio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Within a window of ten years, new registrations are up almost 30%. But contrary to what Instagram stories might tell you, that surge is no longer attributed to vanlifers in demand for pop-up campers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The California crew, which saw a significant rise in newcomers the last few years, is losing market share to fully equipped motorhomes with fabric roofs and bath rooms. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The second surprise is more instructive. The caravan, too, is losing ground to these integrated campervans. Caroline Rogge of Caravaning Center Londerzeel notes that her business now sells roughly as many motorhomes and vans as caravans. “That ratio used to be very different,” she says.<\/p>\n That shift in consumer behaviour has less to do with holiday fashion than with the constraints of electrification.<\/p>\n Electric vehicles are very capable of towing, but doing so wipes out 40-50% of their battery capacity feeding range anxiety. A holiday in the south of France with a 1,500kg caravan behind a typical EV becomes impractical, forging more charging stops. Moreover, parking at a charger with a caravan isn\u2019t always a stress-free experience.<\/p>\n If the new market for motorhomes is stable, the used market is thriving. Some 6,880 second-hand campers changed hands in the first eight months of 2026, a figure that has risen steadily since 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The split between new and used is also a regional phenomenom in Belgium. Flemish buyers dominate the new market with an 80% share, while in Wallonia used purchases outperform new sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Then there is the bed question. Flemish buyers prefer separate single beds, Walloons want a double. It is a trivial-sounding distinction, but could it highlight the north’s pragmatic individualism versus the south’s sense for romance? If any generalisation is permitted.<\/p>\n The second-hand market is also where it gets competitive. Thirty-seven per cent of those used sales are vehicles under five years old. This is far from bargain-huntin. Taking into account slow delivery times for motorhomes, this is a direct alternative to buying new.<\/p>\n Yet the over-20-year segment still commands a remarkable 27% share, suggesting that campers, unlike cars, can age gracefully when the chassis and bodywork hold up.<\/p>\n Finally, the hot summer of 2026 has left its mark. Dealers report surging demand for roof-mounted air conditioning, which in turn is driving interest in lithium-ion battery systems capable of powering those units through the night.
