A new analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E) claims that the residual-value gap between battery-electric and combustion cars could be around 80% smaller once taxation, subsidies, inflation and falling new-EV prices are taken into account.

Based on 2025 used-car transaction data from automotive market specialist Autovista, EVs in Germany, France, Italy and Spain appear at first sight to depreciate significantly faster than combustion cars. The difference in residual value amounts to 12.9 percentage points.

T&E argues, however, that this headline number does not compare like with like. Purchase subsidies reduced the actual acquisition cost of many EVs, while registration and acquisition taxes increased the effective price of combustion cars. Correcting for these factors, inflation and differences in fleet composition cut 5.2 percentage points from the apparent gap, reducing it to 7.7 points.

Falling new-EV prices

The biggest and most debatable correction concerns falling new-car prices. Buyers of a three-year-old EV today do not compare it only to what it cost when new, but also to the price of a comparable new EV today.

As new electric cars have become cheaper, older EVs have been repriced downwards accordingly. T&E estimates that accounting for this effect removes another 5.1 percentage points, leaving a residual-value gap of just 2.6 points compared with combustion cars.

That does not mean leasing companies that bought an EV several years ago only suffered 2.6 percentage points more depreciation. A rapid reduction in new EV prices results in a genuine loss for the original owner. T&E’s argument is rather that this should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of structurally weak demand for used EVs.

The organization expects that effect to diminish as new-EV prices stabilize and gradually converge with combustion-car prices.

Market starting to stabilize

There are also indications that the European second-hand EV market is maturing. According to T&E, EV residual-value volatility had fallen to levels comparable to those of combustion cars during both halves of 2025. The decline in BEV residual values slowed from 2.3 percentage points in the second half of 2024 to just 0.7 points in the second half of 2025.

Germany offers another sign of growing demand: registrations of used battery-electric cars increased by 64% year-on-year during the first seven months of 2026.

Battery transparency could help further. Remarketing company BCA found that EVs with a certified battery health report achieved around 1.4% higher resale values and sold on average 2.7 days faster. Leasing company Arval has meanwhile issued more than 30,000 battery health certificates in Europe and the UK.

Implications for leasing

The findings are particularly relevant to leasing companies because the expected residual value is one of the main factors determining the monthly lease price. T&E argues that overly conservative depreciation assumptions risk making EV leases unnecessarily expensive.

It therefore calls for longer lease periods, standardized battery-health certificates and stronger approved-used schemes. The environmental NGO also links its findings to the proposed EU Corporate Clean Vehicles Regulation, which it says could create more predictable demand for electric fleet vehicles.

That policy position should be distinguished from the underlying market data. T&E actively campaigns for faster electrification, while the transaction figures used in the study come from Autovista.

There is another important limitation: Belgium and the Netherlands are not included. The analysis covers only Germany, France, Italy and Spain, meaning the 2.6-percentage-point figure cannot simply be applied to the Benelux leasing market.

Still, the study raises an important question for a fleet-heavy market such as Belgium: are lease prices for EVs still partly based on depreciation assumptions formed during the volatile early years of electrification, while the second-hand market itself is already beginning to normalize?

Electric cars may retain considerably more of their value than conventional leasing calculations suggest.
