In an interview with France Inter, CEO François Provost said the group intends to invest more than €10 billion in France over the next five years, mainly in electric mobility and more affordable cars.

Renault had already put a more precise figure on that commitment in July, when Provost said it would invest another €13 billion under the futuREady strategy, provided the right conditions are in place.

That follows roughly €13 billion already invested in the country since 2021, potentially bringing Renault’s French industrial and technology investments to around €26 billion over a decade.

The money is intended to reinforce what the group increasingly presents as a highly localized electric-vehicle ecosystem, spanning cars, electric motors, batteries, engineering, and suppliers.

The new investment is not unconditional. Renault stresses that it depends on maintaining a sufficiently competitive economic, social, and political environment in France. Nevertheless, Provost expects French vehicle production to rise by at least 25% this year from around 500,000 vehicles in 2025.

French electric ecosystem

Unlike an investment centered on a single new factory, Renault’s strategy covers much of the EV value chain. Its ElectriCity cluster in northern France brings together Douai, Maubeuge, and Ruitz, while Cléon produces electric motors. Battery production and development are also being increasingly localized in France.

Since 2010, Renault Group has produced more than one million electric vehicles in France, including around 600,000 at ElectriCity. Renault employs roughly 39,000 people in the country and estimates that another 35,000 jobs depend indirectly on its French supply chain.

The company also keeps around 60% of its research and development activities in France. Renault says that 69% of the value added by the Renault 5 is generated in the country. By 2030, the latest investment program should support nine additional models for Renault Group brands and four for partner manufacturers.

The Renault 4 is produced at Maubeuge, another pillar of Renault’s ElectriCity manufacturing hub close to the Belgian border /Renault

The Renault 5 has become one of the most visible symbols of that strategy. It is produced in Douai, together with the Mégane E-Tech, Scénic E-Tech, Alpine A290, and electric models for Nissan and Mitsubishi. Nearby, Maubeuge builds the Renault 4 and Kangoo.

A different picture in Germany

Renault’s expansion of its French EV base contrasts with developments in Germany, where manufacturers are also investing heavily in electrification while cutting costs, capacity, and organizational structures.

Volkswagen alone plans to shed more than 35,000 jobs at its German operations by 2030, while the wider Volkswagen Group is targeting around 50,000 job reductions across VW, Audi, Porsche, and Cariad.

At the same time, a renewed labor dispute now affects around 100,000 VW employees after the company terminated several long-standing wage agreements.

BMW, although in a stronger financial position, has also launched another efficiency drive and wants to simplify its organization while continuing to roll out the Neue Klasse generation of electric cars.

The contrast should not be exaggerated. German manufacturers continue to invest billions in EVs, batteries, factories, and software. But they are financing that transition while simultaneously reducing a much larger and more expensive legacy industrial structure.

China is another important difference. Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche built substantial businesses and profits there. But now they face rapidly strengthening Chinese competitors in what was once one of their most important growth markets. Renault largely withdrew from China’s mainstream passenger-car market years ago.

What previously looked like a weakness now means Renault has considerably less exposure to the erosion of European brands’ position in China. Its strategy is instead more concentrated on European B- and C-segment cars, including relatively affordable EVs such as the Renault 4 and 5.

Benelux matters increasingly

For Belgium and the Netherlands, Renault’s French investment is far from an abstract industrial policy story. Northern France has effectively become Renault’s EV production backyard for the Benelux.

Many of the electric cars produced in Douai and Maubeuge are aimed directly at neighboring European markets, and Belgium and the Netherlands are among Europe’s most electrified car markets.

In Belgium, fully electric cars accounted for a record 50.9% of new registrations in September and 39.1% over the first nine months of 2026. Even among private customers, their share exceeded 20% for the first time.

The Netherlands shows a similar pattern. BEVs accounted for 41.2% of the market in the first three quarters. Renault was the country’s fourth-largest brand in September, with 2,490 registrations, while the French-built Renault 5 was the fifth-most-registered electric model, with 594 units.

Particularly relevant export region

That makes the Benelux a particularly relevant export region for Renault’s French factories. Cars built only a few hundred kilometers from Brussels, Antwerp, or Rotterdam enter markets where electric cars are already becoming mainstream rather than remaining a niche.

Renault is not immune to the broader problems facing Europe’s car industry. Chinese competition is intensifying, manufacturing costs remain high, and EV profitability is still under pressure. But the group is making a clear industrial choice.

Rather than hollowing out its French manufacturing base, Renault is betting another €13 billion that a significant part of the electric car value chain can remain in France, supported by nearby high-EV markets such as Belgium and the Netherlands.

Whether that bet pays off will depend on Renault’s ability to keep French-built models such as the Renault 4 and 5 affordable, while using cars such as the new Twingo E-Tech to push electric mobility further downmarket across Europe.

Renault is doubling down on its French industrial base.
