<\/p>\nAfter mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, Skoda now adds two \u2018full hybrid\u2019 variants to its Octavia offering. It\u2019s a first for Skoda and still a rarity within the Volkswagen Group, although that is likely to change.<\/p>\n
Since its launch in 1996, exactly 30 years ago, the Skoda Octavia has been offered with an extensive range of powertrains. From standard gasoline and diesel engines to mild and plug-in hybrid additions and even a CNG-powered G-Tec version.<\/p>\n
Now, Skoda adds a \u2018full hybrid\u2019 to the Octavia price list, a first for the brand. The new powertrain is available for both the 4-door \u2018Limo\u2019 and the \u2018Combi\u2019 estate versions. The first hybrid-powered Octavia models will roll off the production line in December 2026.<\/p>\n

The Octavia Hybrid launches with two power levels: 100 kW (136 hp) or 125 kW (170 hp). Both use the 1.5 TSI evo2 gasoline engine as a base (rated at 96 kW or 110 kW) and add two electric motors.<\/p>\n
The smaller motor primarily acts as a generator while also starting the combustion engine. The more powerful traction motor drives the front wheels and recuperates energy during braking. A 1.6 kWh NMC battery pack stores energy and powers the traction motor.<\/p>\n
The Octavia has two drive modes. In series mode, it can drive fully electric without using the gasoline engine. The electric range will be limited, given the 1.6 kWh battery and the state of charge that is automatically maintained between 40% and 90%.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, the Octavia can drive fully electric up to 60 km\/h. Useful for city driving or in traffic jams, for example.<\/p>\n

At higher speeds, the Octavia hybrid runs in parallel. The gasoline engine drives the front wheels, and the electric motor assists via an automated clutch and a fixed gear ratio, reducing fossil fuel consumption.<\/p>\n
When decelerating or braking, it recuperates energy and stores it in the battery for later use. The whole process is automatic, with no need to recharge the battery externally.<\/p>\n
A \u2018cordless\u2019 hybrid option is an incentive to go for the \u2018middle ground\u2019 in electrification. Mild hybrid technology only has a limited impact on fuel consumption and emissions.<\/p>\n
And while a plug-in hybrid powertrain uses less fuel when charged frequently, not every buyer has access to charging or is willing to plug in regularly. A PHEV’s larger battery also adds weight and cost.<\/p>\n
Other car manufacturers usually offered a full hybrid before they had a plug-in hybrid. But in the Volkswagen Group, of which Skoda is a part, it has been a very uncommon sight up until now. The VW Golf and T-Roc introduced this driveline.<\/p>\n
Adding a hybrid powertrain to the Octavia can be seen as a way to reduce further global CO2<\/sub> emissions for the brand and the VW Group in general.
