The reborn Freelander brand, jointly developed by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and China’s Chery, has officially confirmed Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands among its European target markets.<\/p>\n

But the international Freelander 8 will be considerably different from the powerful Chinese version: its battery is almost halved, while output drops from 818 to 617 hp.<\/p>\n

As we reported in April<\/a>, the original Land Rover Freelander is returning as a standalone Chinese-built premium SUV brand. Since then, the first model, the imposing 5.12-meter Freelander 8, has gone on sale in China, while Chery and JLR have presented their international expansion plans.<\/p>\n

Europe is included, with Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Spain explicitly named. Germany could see the newcomer in 2027, while Dutch automotive media previously pointed to late 2027 for the Netherlands. Official Benelux launch dates remain unconfirmed.<\/p>\n

Smaller battery, different engine<\/h4>\n

The most striking difference concerns the powertrain. In China, the Freelander 8 uses a 1.5-liter petrol range extender and two electric motors producing a combined 610 kW (818 hp). Its substantial 60.3 kWh CATL battery provides up to 310 km of electric driving under China’s optimistic CLTC cycle.<\/p>\n

For the international left-hand-drive version unveiled in Abu Dhabi, Chery has opted for a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine and a much smaller 34.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.<\/p>\n

Combined output falls to 460 kW (617 hp), with 662 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km\/hour takes 5.8 seconds instead of 4.6 seconds. Chery claims 110 km of electric range and 886 km of combined range, although European WLTP figures are not yet available.<\/p>\n

The international model supports 11 kW AC charging and DC fast charging from 20 to 80% in no more than 20 minutes. These specifications currently apply to the Middle East version. Chery has not yet confirmed whether Europe’s model will use an identical configuration.<\/p>\n

A serious off-roader<\/h4>\n

Despite its electrification, the Freelander 8 is designed to offer more than fashionable SUV styling. Its intelligent all-wheel-drive system features nine driving modes, while dual-chamber air suspension and adaptive damping provide up to 266 mm of ground clearance.<\/p>\n

Chery also claims a wading depth of 900 mm and the ability to climb gradients of 70%. The European model is expected to offer five seats, rather than the optional six-seat configuration of the Chinese version. A fully electric version could follow later, but its European introduction remains unconfirmed.<\/p>\n

Promising start in China<\/h4>\n

The Freelander 8 officially launched in China on 3 September. The initial response was encouraging: Chery reported more than 5,000 firm orders within twelve hours, following over 10,000 reservations during the first 48 hours of presales.<\/p>\n

Customer deliveries were scheduled to begin on 19 September, although reliable retail registration figures are not yet available to assess its longer-term success.<\/p>\n

Chinese promotional prices start at 289,900 yuan (\u20ac35,000), rising to 379,900 yuan (\u20ac46,000). The European model will inevitably cost considerably more.<\/p>\n

An indicative entry price of \u20ac55,000\u2013\u20ac65,000 in Belgium, potentially somewhat higher in the Netherlands, seems plausible, but remains an editorial estimate rather than an announced price.<\/p>\n

British heritage, Chinese technology<\/h4>\n

The Freelander illustrates how dramatically the automotive industry has changed. JLR contributes the historic British name and design expertise, while Chery provides much of the engineering, electric technology, manufacturing and supply chain.<\/p>\n

Crucially, the new Freelander will operate independently of Land Rover’s existing dealer network. In the Netherlands, Chery’s distribution network is expected to play a role.<\/p>\n

Chery already has an established Belgian sales and service network through its Omoda and Jaecoo brands, which could provide a ready-made infrastructure for the introduction of Freelander.<\/p>\n

However, it remains unclear whether the new premium brand will use these dealerships or establish a separate distribution network, independent of both Chery’s existing brands and Land Rover.<\/p>\n

Politically sensitive moment<\/h4>\n

The Freelander’s European ambitions also come at a politically sensitive moment. While Chinese-built plug-in hybrids currently escape the EU’s additional tariffs on battery-electric cars, Brussels is preparing possible restrictions on Chinese hybrid imports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following China’s refusal to voluntarily limit exports, the European Commission is reportedly considering safeguard measures combining import quotas with additional tariffs.<\/p>\n

With the Freelander 8 expected in Europe in 2027, its competitive pricing could depend partly on the outcome of these negotiations. A future fully electric version would face the existing BEV tariff regime unless the rules change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
