Its ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised)’ software is now called ‘Tesla Assisted Driving’, following a compromise with the German government.

But the change is more than cosmetic: it could help unlock the European market for Tesla’s advanced driving software, despite disagreements over speeding, safety and driver responsibility.

The new name has appeared on Tesla’s European websites. In the United States, however, the company continues to use ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised)’, even though the technology still requires continuous human supervision.

For years, regulators have criticized the original name for suggesting a level of autonomy the system cannot provide. Drivers must remain attentive, be ready to intervene, and be legally responsible for their vehicles.

Germany strikes a deal

On 6 October, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport revealed a compromise reached with Tesla following negotiations in September. Berlin confirmed that Tesla had offered to replace the controversial name. In return, Germany is supporting rapid EU-wide approval of the technology.

More controversially, Germany agreed to support allowing the system to exceed posted speed limits by up to 10%. That could mean selecting 55 km/hour in a 50 km/hour zone, although regulatory approval would not automatically legalize speeding.

The government insists that drivers remain entirely responsible. Tesla Assisted Driving is still a Level 2 assistance system, not autonomous driving.

Speeding remains controversial

Germany’s concession does not mean the European dispute has been resolved. The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has criticized Tesla’s ‘speed offset’ function, which can permit a driver-selected margin of up to 50% above detected speed limits, and ‘contextual max speed’, which adapts speed to traffic conditions.

According to ETSC, these functions conflict with European safety requirements. France and Sweden are among the countries expressing reservations, while Germany’s proposed 10% ceiling represents a substantial compromise.

The disagreement has delayed the European approval procedure. A vote previously expected in October has been postponed until December at the earliest.

Netherlands and Belgium already on board

The Netherlands has played a central role in Tesla’s approval campaign. Its vehicle authority, the RDW, granted restricted national authorization in April, which was subsequently recognized by Belgium and several other EU countries.

However, these national approvals do not amount to unrestricted deployment throughout Europe. EU-wide authorization still requires agreement among member states.

The Dutch regulator’s assessment has also attracted controversy. As Newmobility.news reported last week, Reuters revealed that RDW modified parts of its review following a €365,000 billing dispute with Tesla. RDW maintains that its independence and safety assessment were not compromised.

Millions in potential revenue

For Tesla, sacrificing the FSD name could prove a small price for access to Europe’s car market. Elon Musk has repeatedly positioned autonomous-driving technology and software subscriptions as essential to Tesla’s long-term growth, particularly as competition from Chinese EV manufacturers intensifies.

In Belgium and the Netherlands, Tesla advertises its newly renamed ‘Tesla Assisted Driving’ software for €99 per month, including VAT, subject to vehicle compatibility and regulatory restrictions.

Luxembourg is not yet officially listed for the subscription. Interestingly, some of Tesla’s older European support pages still refer to the system by its former ‘Full Self-Driving’ name.

At that price, 100,000 European subscribers would represent approximately €119 million in annual customer spending, including VAT. It is an illustrative calculation, not a sales forecast, but demonstrates the commercial stakes.

Approval could strengthen Tesla’s appeal to European buyers, although it would not authorize driverless robotaxi operations, which require separate regulatory clearance.

Tesla has abandoned one of its most controversial marketing claims in Europe.
