Starting in July 2027, residents of the Brussels Region will be subject to a new vehicle tax. The government led by Minister-President Boris Dilli\u00e8s (MR) has reached an agreement on this matter.<\/p>\n
Small city cars, zero-emission vehicles, and classic cars will be exempt from the Brussels vehicle tax. In contrast, the purchase of large and heavy vehicles will be more strongly discouraged.<\/p>\n

And road tax in Wallonia will be reduced starting April 1. The reduction will be based on engine displacement. Small and medium-sized engines will benefit the most.<\/p>\n
From May 2027, Belgium also plans to introduce a nationwide digital road vignette, the same scheme that has sparked opposition among Dutch motorists.<\/p>\n
Brussels and Wallonia intend to offset its cost through reductions in existing annual road taxes, aiming for overall budget neutrality for domestic motorists. However, this does not guarantee that every individual driver will be fully compensated.<\/p>\n
Preferential treatment for EVs<\/h4>\n
Not much else is known about the new Brussels vehicle tax at the moment, but according to Brussels Finance Minister Dirk De Smedt (Anders), the primary goal of this reform remains to reduce the annual vehicle tax for all passenger cars in Brussels.<\/p>\n
The Walloon government is also reducing vehicle taxes, but not until April 2027. And just as in Brussels, vehicles with small engine displacements and fully EVs will receive preferential treatment here as well.<\/p>\n
According to the government’s tables, the savings range from \u20ac75 per year for cars with an engine displacement of 751 to 1,950 cm\u00b3 to \u20ac40 for cars with an engine displacement of more than 3,050 cm\u00b3. For example, a 1,600 cm\u00b3 gasoline or diesel car pays \u20ac283.51 instead of 358.51 euros per year.<\/p>\n
For classic cars and all privately owned trailers, the road tax will even be reduced to zero. EVs will pay the minimum rate of \u20ac48,61. Starting January 2028, single-parent families will also receive a \u20ac30 discount on the road tax.<\/p>\n
Road tax sticker<\/h4>\n
On the other hand, both Brussels and Wallonia – and this naturally applies to Flanders as well, which will be applying the same principle – will receive hundreds of millions in revenue from the road tax sticker in return.<\/p>\n
Starting April 2, 2027, the road tax sticker for Belgian highways and regional roads will be available for purchase via a digital platform for owners of vehicles registered in Belgium – foreign vehicles weighing up to 3,5 metric tons will also have to pay.<\/p>\n
Drivers will be able to choose a sticker valid for 1 day, 10 days, 1 month, 2 months, or 1 year. An annual sticker would cost between \u20ac90 and \u20ac125, depending on the emission class.<\/p>\n
The administrative fine for noncompliance will be the same across all 3 regions. It would be \u20ac70 for a first offense, \u20ac140 for a second, and \u20ac210 for a third. Only one administrative fine may be imposed per calendar day on a vehicle with the same license plate number.<\/p>\n
The cooperation agreement between the regions provides for the distribution of revenue from the road vignette. Revenue generated by domestic drivers is allocated to the region where the driver is based. This principle does not apply to leased vehicles.<\/p>\n
Revenue from abroad or from leased vehicles is distributed to Brussels in a special way: a lump sum of 24.2 million euros is withheld at the source and allocated to the Brussels Region. In addition, the Walloon Region transfers an additional 5.8 million euros to Brussels, resulting in total net revenue of 30 million euros.<\/p>\n
Road construction<\/h4>\n
Revenue from the road vignette\u2014estimated at 342 or 321 million euros, depending on the source\u2014will be used in part for the maintenance and modernization of the road infrastructure, with an estimated budget of 3.5 billion euros over 7 years.<\/p>\n
The projects – ranging from bridge repairs to the construction of bike paths – will continue to be funded by the per-km toll currently levied on trucks, which is projected to generate 357,5 million euros annually by 2025.
