<\/p>\nAs announced by the brand on many occasions, Smart kept its promise and revealed the production version of the #2 at the Paris Motor Show. Compared to its predecessor, the range has doubled, but the price has remained the same. Is the new two-seater a remedy for inflation?<\/p>\n
Adamant fans will not be disappointed. The #2 looks very familiar and continues the lineage of the small two-seater that kickstarted the brand. But don\u2019t let those looks fool you. Much of the original has been translated to modern taste, for the better.<\/p>\n

The Fortwo EQ formula was minimalism: 2.50 meters, and a battery so small the car was barely allowed off an urban ring road. The #2 keeps the proportions and the short turning circle that makes driving this two-seater such a breeze in dense areas, but adds much more interesting specs to the mix.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s start with what did not change: the motor. The #2 drives its rear axle with 60 kW (82 hp), exactly the output of the Fortwo EQ’s rear motor. Smart quotes 11.6 seconds for the 0-100 km\/h sprint; its predecessor needed roughly the same. Top speed rises from 130 to 140 km\/h, so overall this is the same city-car pace.<\/p>\n
The battery, though, has doubled in size: 35.7 kWh of LFP against the old 17.6 kWh gross. WLTP range moves from a maximum of 159 km to around 290 km. The #2 can, for the first time, credibly leave the city without a support plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The bigger leap is charging. The Fortwo EQ could not DC-charge at all; 22 kW AC was an option, and even then a full session took hours. The #2 accepts 65 kW DC and goes from 10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes, with CATL cells and the pack assembled by Geely.<\/p>\n The #2 sits on the new ECA platform, which Smart has already earmarked for a larger model family. It translates into an extra 29 centimeters of length and explains technical prowess, like details such as a five-link rear axle. Such a \u2018suspension luxury\u2019, aimed at stronger comfort, only pays off when the investment is spread across several cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Weight tells a similar story of growth: curb weight has not been officially confirmed yet, but sources report figures of 1,130 to 1,300 kg, while the Fortwo EQ flirted with one tonne.<\/p>\n Another perk carried over from the previous generation is the Tridion cell. This is a passenger shell of reinforced steel that replaces the crumple zones a 2.79-meter car barely has room for. Smart says the roof withstands more than four tonnes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Seven airbags and a full ADAS suite with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, blind-spot warning, and traffic sign recognition are standard on every trim, which is unusually generous for a \u20ac20,000 car.<\/p>\n And speaking of trims, Smart has designed a #2 for everyone, ranging from a very basic Pure model (\u20ac19.900) to a Couture Edition (\u20ac25,690), which is basically a Louis Vuitton bag on wheels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These prices could have been even more competitive if the car wasn\u2019t built in China, which would have triggered punitive tariffs. But Smart admits that a scenario of a European factory – remember Hambach? – would have added two to three years to the market launch.<\/p>\n The annoying part may be that Smart sells its trim lines in fixed configurations.No options can be selected. Practical consequence: the \u20ac1,000 jump from Pure to Pure+ buys 11 kW AC charging instead of 7.4 kW, cutting a home or office charge from five hours to three. That makes the Pure+ the rational choice.<\/p>\n Whether the #2 has enough charm to counter competition from the Renault Twingo, which offers room for four passengers, remains to be seen. In any case, Smart needs a success.<\/p>\n Its SUVs have sold in sportswar-like volumes in Belgium so far: 260 cars in 2026. There\u2019s no time to waste.
