Electric cars are becoming an unexpected buffer against the global oil crisis. In the Benelux alone, EVs now displace an estimated $1 billion in oil annually, according to the energy think tank Ember.<\/p>\n

Across the EU, electric mobility avoided $3.1 billion in oil consumption in just six months. And with battery-electric cars accounting for more than half of new Belux registrations in September, that energy-security dividend is growing.<\/p>\n

Electric mobility is increasingly about more than cutting emissions. As geopolitical tensions disrupt oil supplies and push up prices, every petrol or diesel car replaced by an EV helps reduce Europe’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

According to Ember, a London-based independent energy think tank advocating a faster transition to clean energy, electric cars displaced an estimated 200 million barrels of crude oil, worth $20 billion, in oil-importing countries between March and August 2026.<\/p>\n

The figures come from its newly launched global EV tracker, covering 56 countries. China accounted for $14 billion, followed by the European Union with $3.1 billion.<\/p>\n

While Ember relies largely on official registration data, its oil savings are modeled estimates based on assumed driving patterns and fuel consumption, rather than independently measured reductions in oil imports.<\/p>\n

Benelux: 2.3 million EVs, $1 billion in avoided oil<\/h4>\n

An analysis by Newmobility.news of Ember’s underlying datasets reveals that Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg together have nearly 2.3 million battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars on the road.<\/p>\n

Their combined fleet displaces an estimated 10.24 million barrels of oil equivalent annually, or approximately 28,000 barrels per day.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands leads with 1.39 million EVs, displacing $540 million worth of oil annually. Belgium follows with nearly 842,000 vehicles and $438.5 million, while Luxembourg’s 65,200 EVs account for another $43.3 million.<\/p>\n

Together, that represents $1.02 billion at Ember’s assumed Brent crude price of $99.80 per barrel.<\/p>\n

These are modeled, annualized estimates, not measured cash savings. They depend on assumptions about mileage, vehicle efficiency and the combustion cars being replaced. Nevertheless, they illustrate the growing economic significance of electrification.<\/p>\n

Belgium crosses the 50% threshold<\/h4>\n

The latest registration figures suggest the Benelux’s oil-displacement potential is still expanding rapidly. According to Febiac and Belgium’s federal mobility administration, battery-electric vehicles accounted for a record 50.9% of new registrations<\/a> in Belgium and Luxembourg combined in September, compared with 46.2% in August.<\/p>\n

Belgium’s cumulative BEV market share reached 39.1% over the first nine months of 2026, up from 34.7% in 2025. Private buyers accounted for 20.2% of BEV registrations, although company cars continue to dominate the transition.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands is even further ahead in Ember’s figures, with BEVs representing 41.3% of new registrations through September. Including plug-in hybrids, its electrified share reached almost 63%.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Belgium’s electric fleet is only 61% the size of the Dutch fleet but delivers an estimated 81% of the Dutch fleet’s oil displacement.<\/p>\n

Differences in driving patterns and vehicle composition may explain part of that gap, although Ember’s methodology does not establish a definitive cause.<\/p>\n

From climate policy to energy security<\/h4>\n

Elsewhere in Europe, the economic impact is already substantial. Germany’s EV fleet displaced approximately $760 million worth of oil between March and August, while France accounted for $560 million.<\/p>\n

Denmark offers an even more striking example: its electric fleet displaces an estimated 6.4 million barrels annually, equivalent to 13% of the country’s total oil consumption in 2025.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the global EV transition is spreading beyond its traditional strongholds. Battery-electric cars reached an 18% worldwide market share during the first eight months of 2026, up from 16% a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Outside China and the United States, BEV sales increased by 45%, with emerging markets such as India, Brazil, and Vietnam gaining momentum.<\/p>\n

The US stands out in the opposite direction. Its BEV market share has fallen to around 6%, and 49 of the 56 countries monitored by Ember now report higher electric-car shares.<\/p>\n

Less oil, but not without costs<\/h4>\n

Ember’s calculations are not a complete economic balance sheet. They do not deduct the costs of electricity production, charging infrastructure, or EV purchases. Plug-in hybrids also introduce uncertainty because their actual fuel savings depend heavily on how often drivers recharge.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the oil displaced is calculated against a hypothetical combustion-vehicle fleet, rather than measured directly at refineries or fuel pumps.<\/p>\n

Still, the underlying message is increasingly relevant for Europe. Every barrel no longer needed for road transport reduces exposure to international supply disruptions and price shocks.<\/p>\n
