While European carmakers struggle to make electric vehicles affordable, China’s BYD is pushing in the opposite direction: offering luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology at prices that seem almost impossible by European standards. Its new Da Han electric flagship promises up to 1,008 km of range, nearly 500 hp, and nine-minute charging for the equivalent of around \u20ac30,000.<\/p>\n

Unveiled in China on October 13, the BYD Da Han (Great Han) is a 5.26-meter luxury electric sedan, placing it squarely in the company of the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE, and Audi A6 e-tron.<\/p>\n

Yet its starting price of 235,900 yuan (approximately \u20ac28,500) is a fraction of what European customers pay for comparable premium electric cars.<\/p>\n

Even allowing for EU import tariffs, Belgian VAT, transport and distribution costs, a hypothetical European price of \u20ac50,000\u2013\u20ac60,000 would still significantly undercut the BMW i5 (from \u20ac74,950), Mercedes EQE (\u20ac67,760) and Audi A6 e-tron (\u20ac65,300). The larger Mercedes EQS starts at nearly \u20ac100,000.<\/p>\n

BYD has not confirmed any European launch or pricing for the Da Han, however. Three versions are available in China, with the top model priced at 275,900 yuan (approximately \u20ac33,400).<\/p>\n

Even the entry-level model develops 370 kW (496 hp), reaching 100 km\/hour in 4.9 seconds. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive flagship raises output to 570 kW (764 hp) and cuts acceleration to just 3.3 seconds.<\/p>\n

Luxury without the premium price?<\/h4>\n

Despite its aggressive pricing, BYD has not economized on equipment. The Da Han features rear-wheel steering, dual-chamber air suspension, Nappa leather, massaging seats, and a 31-speaker Devialet audio system.<\/p>\n

Rear passengers get reclining seats with electric leg rests, while the dashboard combines a 17.3-inch central display with a 40-inch augmented-reality head-up display. BYD’s latest LiDAR-based ‘God’s Eye’ 5.0 driver assistance is also standard.<\/p>\n

Its aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.197 helps explain the remarkable claimed range. The rear-wheel-drive version travels up to 1,008 km on China’s CLTC cycle, using a 102.3 kWh second-generation Blade Battery.<\/p>\n

However, China’s CLTC test cycle is more generous than Europe’s WLTP standard. The Da Han’s estimated 800\u2013820 km WLTP-equivalent range would comfortably exceed the BMW i5’s 626 km and Mercedes EQE’s 693 km.<\/p>\n

But it would fall short of the new BMW i3 Neue Klasse, which promises up to 912 km, and the updated Mercedes EQS, rated at up to 926 km. Unlike these European figures, BYD’s WLTP-equivalent range remains an unofficial estimate.<\/p>\n

Nine-minute charging, with conditions<\/h4>\n

Even more striking is BYD’s claim that the battery can be charged from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes using its Flash Charging system. That means adding almost 89 kWh in less time than many drivers spend refueling and paying for petrol.<\/p>\n

However, achieving this requires dedicated high-power infrastructure. BYD’s latest chargers can deliver up to 1,500 kW, far beyond the capabilities of most European public charging stations. Independent verification of Da Han’s real-world charging performance remains limited.<\/p>\n

The technology is nevertheless relevant to Europe. BYD has just presented its seven-seat Atto 8 electric SUV at the Paris Motor Show, featuring the same second-generation Blade Battery technology and nine-minute charging claim. European sales are scheduled to begin in early 2027.<\/p>\n

BYD reportedly aims to deploy 100 Flash Chargers across Europe by the end of 2026 and 3,000 by the end of 2027. Whether that ambitious timetable can be achieved remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

A warning for Europe’s premium brands<\/h4>\n

There are currently no confirmed plans to introduce the Da Han in Europe. Its Chinese price would also be impossible to reproduce directly here, given import duties, transport, homologation, taxes, and distribution costs.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the car illustrates how quickly the competitive landscape is changing. Chinese manufacturers are no longer relying simply on cheap electric cars. Increasingly, they offer technologies and equipment traditionally reserved for Europe’s most expensive models.<\/p>\n

BYD’s growing European ambitions make that especially relevant. The company is expanding its dealer network, preparing local production, and investing in its own charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Da Han may never appear in European showrooms. But the technology behind it will almost certainly.
