Both collaborations focus on developing the next generation of automated driving systems.

The collaboration brings together Mercedes‑Benz’s and Volvo’s automotive engineering and safety expertise, along with their respective operating systems, and Nvidia’s accelerated computing and AI technologies.

Volvo

“Guided by Volvo Cars’ pioneering safety knowledge and powered by the Nvidia Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the technology will enable future Volvo cars to safely navigate complex real-world environments from door to door. This includes everything from highways and busy urban streets to parking scenarios,” Volvo proudly announces.

The technology will make its debut in a next-generation Volvo car as part of the company’s recently announced largest-ever product push.

“Volvo Cars will combine its industry-leading vehicle safety systems and engineering expertise with Nvidia’s AI and accelerated computing technologies. These include the Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, Halos OS, and Alpamayo Stack driving software.”

Together, the companies will raise the bar for AI-enabled car safety while making driving feel easier and more effortless for customers, with a gradual introduction of eyes-off and mind-off driving. The ambition is to set a new benchmark for automated driving that is safe, convenient, and worthy of customer trust.

“Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for almost 100 years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “By working with Nvidia, we bring together two distinct strengths: industry-leading safety knowledge and world-class AI technology. That combination gives us a unique opportunity to create safer and more attractive cars for our customers.”

“Accelerated computing has transformed the car into an intelligent machine that can understand the world around it,” Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, responded. “Volvo has spent nearly a century protecting people on the road. Together, we’re combining Volvo’s extraordinary vehicle safety systems with Nvidia Hyperion and Halos to build a new generation of cars that make driving safer and more effortless.”

This expanded partnership marks another milestone in the companies’ long-standing collaboration, which began in 2017. Volvo Cars wants to bring the industry’s most advanced computing capabilities into its next generation of electric cars, establishing it as a leader in software-defined cars.

Mercedes-Benz

At nearly the same time, Mercedes‑Benz and Nvidia announced they will extend their strategic partnership to advance the next generation of automated driving systems. The collaboration brings together Mercedes‑Benz’s automotive engineering and safety expertise and its MB.OS with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI technologies, including the Hyperion compute and sensor architecture, Alpamayo Stack software, and the Halos safety system, to accelerate automated vehicle development.

“Nvidia is our most important strategic partner in automated driving. Together, we developed the first Mercedes‑Benz assistance system for urban point-to-point driving for the western world,” said Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, and Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement.

“The expansion of our partnership marks a significant milestone and reflects the mutual trust we have built over the years. Together, we aim to bring further pioneering innovations to the road, offering our customers the best automated driving experience while upholding the high safety standards they expect from a Mercedes‑Benz,” he added.

“Accelerated computing is giving vehicles the intelligence to understand the world and reason through complex driving situations. Mercedes‑Benz brings the engineering excellence and commitment to safety this transformation demands, Ali Kani, Vice President of Automotive at Nvidia, responded. “Together, we’re building on Nvidia Hyperion to bring that intelligence and full-stack safety to the road and make autonomous driving an everyday reality.”

Beyond automated driving, Mercedes‑Benz also relies on Nvidia technologies for vehicle engineering simulation and within MO360, its digital production ecosystem, from virtual planning to AI-based applications.
