Kia’s hydrogen surfaced unusually. The new vehicle is part of a deal covering investments of 1 trillion won, roughly 600 million euros, and 915 extra jobs.<\/p>\n
Spawning from a work\u2019s agreework’sthe planned fuel-cell Carnival looks more like a factory utilization fix than a technology bet. The Gwangmyeong Plant 2 (in the province by the same name) currently has unused capacity of around 200 cars per day, along with two more lines at another factory.<\/p>\n
The union asked Kia to give those workers more work, including building the Telluride SUV in Korea rather than the United States. Kia refused. But assigning a fuel-cell Carnival to the underused Gwangmyeong line is the compromise that emerged.<\/p>\n
The Carnival is a peculiar pick for an FCEV, as it is an underrepresented one. While Hyundai and BMW settled for popular SUVs, and Toyota chose sedans with the Crown and the Mirai, Kia settled for a large people mover.<\/p>\n
The Carnival left European showrooms in 2012, and it remains extremely doubtful whether the hydrogen version will reverse that decision. There\u2019s also a zero-emission model in the pipeline that stands a better chance to revive Kia\u2019s presence in the MPV segment.<\/p>\n
Launching a fuel cell in a minivan package suggests Kia\u2014obviously\u2014sees hydrogen as a niche for big, heavy, long-range vehicles rather than a volume play. Specifications, battery size, or a fuel-cell supplier haven\u2019t been disclosed yet, but given the strong ties with Hyundai, it seems logical that the Nexo would serve as a donor.<\/p>\n
At this stage, the only confirmed facts are the model, the plant, and the year. And even the latter leaves room for confirmation. Kia’s chief, Ho-seong Song, had previously hinted that the brand’s first electric passenger could arrive in 2028. The union agreement now says 2029.<\/p>\n
Though the arrival of a water-emitting Carnival is good news for hydrogen mobility, the numbers remain bleak. During the first half of the year, the EU market for hydrogen passenger cars slipped 64%, from 39 units in 2025 to barely 14 vehicles.<\/p>\n
In Korea, though, the market grew by 13%. The Asian country now accounts for more than 70% of worldwide FCEV registrations, as the government continues to push for a hydrogen economy.<\/p>\n
Belgium counts just eight public hydrogen stations, and one of them, in Erpe-Mere, has been out of service for an extended period. When it works, hydrogen currently retails at an expensive 12 euros per kilo.
