Volkswagen is temporarily pausing development work on the future ID. Golf. The automaker cites cost pressure as the reason and plans to resume work as soon as it secures the necessary investments.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen has temporarily suspended development work on the electric ID. Golf. Brand CEO Thomas Sch\u00e4fer first announced the pause in an internal interview, as reported by the German newspaper Handelsblatt. The company has since officially confirmed the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe simply cannot afford this work right now,\u201d Sch\u00e4fer said, according to Reuters. The aim is to resume development as soon as possible. In its statement on the nine-month figures for the Brand Group Core, Volkswagen echoed this sentiment, noting that development work for the future ID. Golf is being temporarily paused \u201cuntil we can securely allocate the necessary investments\u201d.<\/p>\n

The move comes shortly after Volkswagen Group\u00a0reported a net loss<\/a> of around \u20ac5.8 billion for the third quarter of 2026. The carmaker attributed it to a multibillion-euro write-down at its Porsche subsidiary, weak business in China, and restructuring costs.<\/p>\n

Cost-saving program<\/h4>\n

The pause is part of a broader cost-saving program. Volkswagen aims to tighten investment discipline, reduce upfront expenditures, and improve working capital to strengthen net cash flow.<\/p>\n

In the Brand Group Core, net cash flow declined sharply in the first nine months of 2026: from \u20ac4.34 billion to \u20ac1.43 billion. The group\u2019s revenue remained nearly stable at \u20ac106.4 billion, but operating profit fell from \u20ac4.72 billion to \u20ac4.33 billion. Operating return on sales fell from 4.4% to 4.1%.<\/p>\n

The core Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is under particular pressure. Its operating profit fell from \u20ac1.48 billion to \u20ac813 million in the first nine months, with the operating return on sales standing at 1.3%. Without special measures such as restructuring, the planned sale of the Volkswagen Osnabr\u00fcck plant, and the discontinuation of ID.4 production in Chattanooga, Volkswagen says the figure would have been 2.6%.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen currently faces a challenging position. While demand for electric vehicles is rising, the company notes that battery-electric vehicles have yet to achieve the margins of comparable internal combustion engine vehicles. As a result, the share of less profitable electric vehicles is increasing, while the volume of more profitable ICE vehicles is declining.<\/p>\n

Cost pressure is also high at the main Wolfsburg plant. According to Reuters, the plant is currently around \u20ac300 million behind its cost target for the year. In contrast, the pure EV manufacturing plants in Emden and Zwickau are on track to reduce factory costs.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Key model<\/h4>\n

The second-generation electric Golf was originally planned to debut in 2028, based on the Volkswagen Group\u2019s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which it is developing in collaboration with Rivian. Earlier this year, however, Thomas Sch\u00e4fer confirmed that the ID. Golf has been pushed back to the end of the decade.<\/p>\n

The development pause for the ID. Golf is particularly significant because the model is based on the upcoming Scalable Systems Platform. The group-wide new electric platform is designed to reduce technical complexity and costs, among other benefits.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear whether the current pause will delay this timeline. The Volkswagen Works Council told Reuters that it could make up any lost time. However, employee representatives view the spending freeze as another sign of the group\u2019s strained financial situation.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen explicitly describes the measure as temporary but has not yet specified when development work on the ID. Golf will resume.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s electric Golf equivalent, the ID.3 Neo, recently got a major facelift that added a few more years to its lifespan. What\u2019s more, the lower-priced ID. Polo and ID. Cross are seeing huge success across Europe, so the brand seems to have locked in its lineup for the next half-decade, and then the ID. Golf can take it over.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly what Sch\u00e4fer said earlier this year, referring to the delayed launch of the ID. Golf. \u201cWe have a fantastic lineup now that we do not need an electric Golf in 2028. We are well set with what we have in our portfolio with our vehicles.”<\/p>\n

So, Volkswagen will begin building the electric Golf in Wolfsburg close to the end of the decade, while production of the gas-powered model will normally move to Mexico in 2027.<\/p>\n
