But can Stellantis preserve their individual identities as they increasingly share technology, platforms and management?

The reshuffle, effective November 2, reflects a broader reorganization initiated when Vidal returned from Renault in October 2025. His objective is to make each brand more distinctive, from affordable Fiat city cars to premium Maseratis.

It is a considerable challenge for a group built around economies of scale. Increasingly similar technical foundations mean that design must provide much of the differentiation customers actually notice.

From BMW X6 to Opel

For Belgian designer Pierre Leclercq (54), the move to Opel marks another chapter in an international career spanning BMW, Great Wall Motors, Kia and Citroën.

His most famous achievement remains the original BMW X6, which helped establish the SUV-coupé category. He also worked on the second-generation BMW X5 and became Head of BMW M Design in 2011.

At Citroën, which he joined in 2018, Leclercq oversaw the design of models including the new C3, C3 Aircross, and C5 Aircross, as well as unconventional concepts such as Oli and ELO.

He now replaces Mark Adams, retiring after nearly 25 years at Opel. Adams shaped the brand’s modern identity through its ‘Bold and Pure’ philosophy, including the characteristic Vizor front end and Pure Panel cockpit.

His influence will persist. The recently unveiled Opel STX Concept already previews the next generation of Opel styling. Leclercq therefore inherits a design direction whose foundations are largely established.

One designer, two French brands

Sandeep Bhambra’s appointment is arguably the more consequential change. Having joined Stellantis only in April 2026, he now assumes responsibility for both Citroën and DS Automobiles.

The Indian-born designer previously worked for Mahindra, Tata, Peugeot and Renault. His portfolio includes contributions to the Peugeot Onyx concept and 2008, alongside advanced-design leadership on Renault projects such as Scénic Vision, Emblème and the spectacular Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

He succeeds Leclercq at Citroën and Thierry Metroz at DS, whose work helped establish the French premium brand’s identity. Metroz moves to a European design-strategy role supporting Vidal.

Citroën and DS already share CEO Xavier Chardon. Now they also share a design chief, despite pursuing very different customers.

Citroën needs affordable, practical and original vehicles. DS must convince buyers that it offers genuine French premium alternatives. Preserving that distinction will be Bhambra’s biggest challenge.

The other European design chiefs

Vidal’s responsibilities extend well beyond the French and German brands. Peugeot remains under Matthias Hossann, associated with the latest 308 and 3008 design generations.

In Italy, François Leboine heads Fiat design, having made his mark with the Renault 5 Prototype and Fiat Grande Panda. Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos leads Alfa Romeo, following his successful work at Seat and Cupra, including the Formentor.

Gianni Colonello oversees Lancia’s design renaissance, including the new Gamma, while Klaus Busse continues to shape Maserati, whose portfolio includes the MC20 supercar and GranTurismo.

These designers retain responsibility for their respective brands, but Vidal provides the overarching European creative direction. With Citroën and DS sharing Bhambra, eight brand-design responsibilities are now concentrated in seven chiefs.

A different organization in America

Across the Atlantic, Stellantis follows a comparable regional structure. Scott Krugger, appointed Head of North America Design in July 2025, oversees Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram.

He previously led Dodge exterior design and worked with Alfa Romeo and Jeep in Europe. His task is to preserve American brand identities, from Jeep’s off-road heritage to Ram’s pickup-truck character and Dodge’s performance image.

Above both Krugger and Vidal stands Ralph Gilles, Stellantis’ global Chief Design Officer, responsible for coordinating the group’s worldwide design strategy.

The system combines regional creative autonomy with central oversight, rather than imposing one universal styling language on every brand.

Whose vision will prevail?

The immediate impact of the European reshuffle may be limited. Vehicle development cycles typically stretch over several years, meaning many models arriving in 2027 and 2028 are already well advanced.

Leclercq and Bhambra will initially manage projects shaped by their predecessors. Their own creative signatures may only become fully apparent toward 2030.

For Stellantis, the challenge is bigger than changing faces at the top. Sharing components makes economic sense, but buyers do not choose a Citroën, Opel, Alfa Romeo or Maserati because of the Stellantis badge.

They choose those brands because each promises something different. The real test for Vidal’s new organization will be whether that difference becomes more convincing — or increasingly difficult to recognize.

Stellantis is reshuffling its European design leadership, appointing Belgian Pierre Leclercq to head Opel and Vauxhall while former Renault designer Sandeep Bhambra takes charge of both Citroën and DS Automobiles.
