Tesla, Peugeot, Citroën, and Dacia feature prominently among models with higher inspection-defect rates.

Using GOCA Vlaanderen’s detailed figures, Newmobility.news compares the best- and worst-performing cars across different age groups.

Flanders’ first GOCA Barometer offers an unprecedented opportunity to compare the technical condition of hundreds of car models on Belgian roads, based on more than two million periodic vehicle inspections between July 2025 and June 2026.

Inspired by Germany’s long-established TÜV Report, GOCA’s first barometer offers a detailed picture of the technical condition of cars on Flemish roads.

However, while the German report explicitly ranks the best- and worst-performing models, GOCA deliberately refrains from publishing such league tables, stressing that inspection results should not be confused with overall vehicle reliability.

Newmobility.news has therefore compiled its own comparisons using GOCA’s published data, applying the same age categories and minimum sample sizes. As with the German rankings, the results provide some useful guidance for second-hand buyers, but should not be mistaken for definitive measures of vehicle reliability.

The figures are not adjusted for mileage, maintenance, or driving patterns, and defects can vary considerably in severity. Consequently, these comparisons show how models perform at inspection, rather than establishing which cars are inherently the most reliable. But even with those limitations, the differences are striking.

Volvo leads among younger cars

Volvo’s XC60 and XC40 lead the rankings among four- to five-year-old cars, while Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y have the highest recorded defect rates /Source: GOCA Vlaanderen, NMN graphic

Among four- to five-year-old vehicles, the Volvo XC60 has the lowest recorded defect rate: just 4.3% of 2,552 inspected cars. Its smaller sibling, the XC40, follows at 4.6%, based on 5,965 inspections.

Volkswagen’s T-Roc and Toyota’s Yaris Cross share third place at 5.3%, followed by the Opel Crossland (5.4%).

At the opposite end, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y both record 21.0%, more than double the age-group average of 10.0%. The Citroën C4 Spacetourer (18.2%), Peugeot 308 (17.5%), and Jeep Compass (17.4%) also fare poorly.

Among six- to seven-year-old cars, the VW T-Roc takes the lead with just 3.8% defects, ahead of the Volvo XC40 (3.9%), VW T-Cross (4.3%), and Volvo XC60 (4.5%).

Tesla’s Model 3 finishes last among the 143 qualifying models, at 22.0%, followed by the Dacia Logan (20.7%), Mercedes-Benz V-Class (20.6%), and Peugeot 508 (19.7%).

Honda and Toyota age gracefully

Older vehicles produce a different set of frontrunners, particularly among Japanese models. At eight to nine years, the VW Golf Sportsvan and Toyota RAV4 share first place with 4.7%, closely followed by the Honda HR-V (4.8%) and Honda Jazz (4.9%).

The Golf Sportsvan remains the best performer at ten to eleven years, with just 5.0% defects against an age-group average of 14.0%.

At twelve to thirteen years, Honda’s Jazz leads with 7.0%, followed by the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (8.8%), Verso-S (9.1%), and RAV4 (9.4%). The Jazz also tops the fourteen- to fifteen-year-old category at 11.0%, less than half the age-group average of approximately 23%. The Toyota Verso-S follows at 11.9%, ahead of the Toyota Yaris (13.5%).

The results suggest that several Honda and Toyota models retain a relatively favorable technical condition as they age, although differences in vehicle use and maintenance remain important.

Peugeot and Citroën struggle with age

At the other end of the twelve- to thirteen-year-old category, the Citroën C5 records the highest defect rate at 34.7%, followed by the Peugeot 5008 (31.7%) and Peugeot 206+ (28.0%).

Among fourteen- to fifteen-year-olds, the Peugeot 5008 reaches 35.2%, the Citroën C5 35.1%, and the Volvo V50 34.8%.

The V50’s appearance is particularly interesting given the excellent results of the much younger XC60 and XC40. It illustrates why even cars from the same manufacturer should not automatically be judged alike.

Electric cars: the Skoda Enyaq surprise

GOCA also provides a separate comparison of 43 electric models aged approximately four to seven years. Because fewer older EVs are available for inspection, the minimum sample is reduced to 150 vehicles per model.

The BMW i4 records the lowest defect rate at just 5.0%, followed by the Mercedes-Benz EQC (5.7%), BMW iX3 (5.9%), and electric Volkswagen Golf (5.9%).

At the opposite end, the Skoda Enyaq reaches a striking 27.6%, followed by the Dacia Spring (22.1%), Tesla Model S (22.0%), Model 3 (21.4%), and Model Y (21.0%).

The Enyaq’s result is particularly intriguing because its Volkswagen Group sibling, the ID.4, records only 7.9%, despite both cars sharing the MEB electric platform. Much of the difference is associated with headlights: 21.6% of inspected Enyaqs had headlight defects, compared with just 3.4% of ID.4s.

One possible explanation lies in the complexity of modern LED headlights and automatic leveling systems. Automotive lighting specialist HELLA has documented a specific adjustment issue affecting Enyaqs built between 2021 and 2024. If the automatic leveling system is not reset to its reference position before adjustment, the resulting beam setting may be incorrect.

This provides a plausible technical explanation worth investigating, although it does not establish the cause of the high defect rate in Flemish.

Germany sees similar patterns

Some findings echo Germany’s TÜV Report 2026, based on approximately 9.5 million inspections. Tesla’s Model Y finished last among 110 models aged two to three years, with a major-defect rate of 17.3%. The Model 3 also performed poorly, at 13.1%.

Among four- to five-year-old vehicles, the Model 3 reached 21.0%, matching its Flemish result in the same age category. German inspectors also identified recurring lighting problems, as well as defects in the suspension and brake discs. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s T-Roc and Toyota’s Yaris Cross were among the stronger performers in Germany.

Although the similarities are noteworthy, the two countries apply different inspection definitions, so their percentages cannot be compared directly.

A useful guide for second-hand buyers

For prospective used-car buyers, the GOCA Barometer offers something previously unavailable in Flanders: a large-scale overview of how individual models perform at technical inspections as they age.

It remains a snapshot, not a comprehensive reliability assessment. The figures do not measure engine or battery failures, repair costs, breakdown frequency, or owner satisfaction.

Moreover, a model with numerous incorrectly adjusted headlights may record a higher defect rate than one with fewer but potentially more expensive mechanical problems.

Nevertheless, the information becomes particularly relevant as Flanders prepares to abolish mandatory pre-sale inspections for used cars already registered in Belgium from January 2027.

The results highlight the importance of checking the condition of an individual vehicle rather than relying on brand reputation alone.

They also raise a broader question: if headlights account for so many inspection defects, how accurately do negative inspection results reflect a vehicle’s actual safety? That is the subject of the third and final part of our GOCA Barometer series.

Volvo and Volkswagen excel among relatively young cars, while Honda and Toyota stand out as vehicles age.
