Il s'agit d'un dispositif compact con\u00e7u pour produire entre 13 et 130 chevaux, mais \u00e0 quoi cela peut-il bien servir ? Et s'agit-il d'un projet r\u00e9alisable ou simplement d'une id\u00e9e d'ing\u00e9nierie farfelue ?<\/p>\n<h4>Retour aux ann\u00e9es 60<\/h4>\n<p>En tant que fervent d\u00e9fenseur \u2013 et de plus en plus isol\u00e9 \u2013 de l'hydrog\u00e8ne comme source d'\u00e9nergie pour les voitures particuli\u00e8res, il faut reconna\u00eetre que la turbine de Toyota est une prouesse technique d'une grande \u00e9l\u00e9gance. C'est aussi une solution qui remonte aux ann\u00e9es soixante.<\/p>\n<p>En 1963, la \u00ab Turbine Car \u00bb de Chrysler pouvait fonctionner \u00e0 la tequila, tourner \u00e0 36 000 tr\/min et ressemblait \u00e0 un croisement entre un avion et une voiture. Fait int\u00e9ressant, l\u2019entreprise en a construit cinquante exemplaires. Mais cette technologie n\u2019a jamais d\u00e9coll\u00e9, car les turbines, une fois miniaturis\u00e9es pour les voitures particuli\u00e8res, consomment trop de carburant et d\u00e9gagent une chaleur insupportable.<\/p>\n<p>Une turbine peut fonctionner avec diff\u00e9rents carburants, mais Toyota estime que l'hydrog\u00e8ne change la donne. Il s'agit en fait de la troisi\u00e8me approche de Toyota en mati\u00e8re d'hydrog\u00e8ne. L'entreprise fabrique d\u00e9j\u00e0 des berlines \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible et utilise \u00e9galement l'hydrog\u00e8ne dans les moteurs \u00e0 combustion interne. Le mod\u00e8le qui incarne le mieux cette premi\u00e8re approche est la Mirai ; la<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Le concept Corolla Cross H2 avait \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 il y a trois ans. Toyota avait alors d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le projet \u00e9tait \u00e0 40% de sa commercialisation, mais trois ans plus tard, le moteur \u00e0 combustion interne \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne reste une curiosit\u00e9 du monde du sport automobile.<\/p>\n<h4>Le probl\u00e8me, c'est l'\u00e9chelle<\/h4>\n<p>Passons maintenant \u00e0 la turbine. Le brevet d\u00e9crit une chambre de combustion de turbine \u00e0 gaz, c'est-\u00e0-dire la chambre o\u00f9 l'air et le carburant se rencontrent et br\u00fblent. Dans une turbine \u00e0 gaz classique, de l\u2019air comprim\u00e9 p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans une chambre en forme de bo\u00eete, le carburant y est pulv\u00e9ris\u00e9, les allumeurs s\u2019activent, et les gaz en expansion font tourner une roue de turbine. Cette roue entra\u00eene un compresseur et, si tout se passe bien, laisse suffisamment d\u2019\u00e9nergie exc\u00e9dentaire pour actionner un arbre de transmission ou un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur.<\/p>\n<p>Le probl\u00e8me de Toyota, c\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9chelle. Une turbine navale d\u00e9veloppe des milliers de chevaux. Toyota vise une puissance comprise entre 13 et 130. On est l\u00e0 dans la fourchette allant du cyclomoteur \u00e0 la moto. \u00c0 cette \u00e9chelle, la chambre de combustion devient un v\u00e9ritable chaos thermique. Le brevet reconna\u00eet qu\u2019il faut une \u201c structure moins complexe \u201d, ce qui, en langage d\u2019ing\u00e9nierie, signifie \u201c nous essayons d\u2019emp\u00eacher ce syst\u00e8me de partir en vrille \u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Combustion uniforme<\/h4>\n<p>Et puis, il y a la question du carburant. L\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne est plus l\u00e9ger que l\u2019essence ou le k\u00e9ros\u00e8ne, et il br\u00fble \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature bien plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e. C\u2019est excellent pour la densit\u00e9 de puissance. C\u2019est catastrophique pour tout le reste. Dans une chambre de combustion classique, on pulv\u00e9rise le carburant, on l'allume et on esp\u00e8re que le m\u00e9lange s'enflamme de mani\u00e8re homog\u00e8ne. Avec l'hydrog\u00e8ne, cela ne fonctionne pas. Le carburant se disperse diff\u00e9remment, et les oxydes d'azote sont g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00e0 des niveaux qui feraient rougir un ing\u00e9nieur sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans le diesel.<\/p>\n<p>La solution propos\u00e9e par Toyota consiste en un ensemble de petits injecteurs dispos\u00e9s dans la chambre de combustion. Chaque injecteur re\u00e7oit de l'air comprim\u00e9 et de l'hydrog\u00e8ne par deux conduits distincts. Les deux flux se rejoignent \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur de la buse, se m\u00e9langent intimement, puis un allumeur int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'injecteur d\u00e9clenche l'allumage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Il n'en r\u00e9sulte pas une seule grande flamme, mais de nombreuses flammes plus petites et r\u00e9parties. Cette uniformit\u00e9 est importante, car elle \u00e9vite la formation de zones o\u00f9 une quantit\u00e9 excessive d'hydrog\u00e8ne entrerait en contact avec une quantit\u00e9 insuffisante d'air. Elle permet \u00e9galement aux flammes d'atteindre les coins de la chambre de combustion qu'un seul injecteur central laisserait non chauff\u00e9s. Cela entra\u00eenerait une perte de puissance et de rendement.<\/p>\n<h4>Pertes thermiques<\/h4>\n<p>Les turbines \u00e0 gaz sont efficaces sur le plan thermodynamique \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle et \u00e0 haute temp\u00e9rature. Si on les r\u00e9duit, leurs performances en p\u00e2tissent. Les pertes thermiques repr\u00e9sentent alors une part plus importante de l'\u00e9nergie totale. L'inertie de rotation qui assure le fonctionnement fluide d'une turbine dans un avion devient un v\u00e9ritable cauchemar dans les embouteillages. Chrysler l'a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 en 1963. Sa voiture \u00e0 turbine tournait au ralenti \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures d'\u00e9chappement capables de faire fondre le pare-chocs de la voiture qui la suivait.<\/p>\n<p>L'hydrog\u00e8ne ne r\u00e9sout pas ce probl\u00e8me. Il modifie la chimie \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur de la chambre de combustion, mais la roue de turbine doit toujours extraire du travail du gaz chaud. L'approche \u00e0 injecteurs multiples est une v\u00e9ritable prouesse technique. Mais la turbine elle-m\u00eame est une solution \u00e0 un probl\u00e8me que les batteries ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9solu avec moins de composants. Et sans carburant exotique, sur un r\u00e9seau \u00e9lectrique existant.<\/p>\n<p>On voit mal comment cela pourrait \u00eatre mis en pratique. \u00c0 part dans le cadre d\u2019une configuration EREV o\u00f9 elle sert de fonction g\u00e9n\u00e9ratrice, la turbine ne semble pas \u00eatre la solution la plus adapt\u00e9e pour favoriser la perc\u00e9e de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne dans le secteur de la mobilit\u00e9 des voitures particuli\u00e8res.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toyota filed a patent last month for a hydrogen-powered gas turbine combustor.
