Tout le monde\u00a0Ceux qui pensaient que nous pourrions remonter le temps en mati\u00e8re de climat et revenir \u00e0 l\u2019ancienne \u2018 normalit\u00e9 \u2019 vont \u00eatre d\u00e9\u00e7us. M\u00eame si nous arr\u00eations de rouler en voiture \u00e0 essence et de faire des barbecues, personne parmi ceux qui vivent aujourd\u2019hui ne conna\u00eetra plus jamais cette ancienne normalit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce message qui donne \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir est celui de Bart Strengers, climatologue \u00e0 l'Agence n\u00e9erlandaise d'\u00e9valuation environnementale. \u201c<\/span>\u201d En raison de l'inertie du syst\u00e8me climatique, il faudra peut-\u00eatre plusieurs d\u00e9cennies, plusieurs si\u00e8cles, voire plusieurs mill\u00e9naires avant que nous puissions inverser la tendance. De plus, atteindre la neutralit\u00e9 carbone ne suffit pas ; si nous voulons v\u00e9ritablement refroidir la plan\u00e8te, il faudra parvenir \u00e0 des \u00e9missions n\u00e9gatives. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Mais comment en est-on arriv\u00e9 l\u00e0 ?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Roger Pielke Jr., un expert am\u00e9ricain sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques extr\u00eames, l'explique dans son blog \u2018 The Honest Broker \u2019. <\/span>Depuis 1950, la dur\u00e9e des vagues de chaleur sur notre continent s'allonge de 2,6 jours par d\u00e9cennie. Et pour chaque degr\u00e9 de r\u00e9chauffement climatique, les temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eames en Europe augmentent de 3,4 degr\u00e9s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les gaz \u00e0 effet de serre issus de la combustion de combustibles fossiles (comme ceux \u00e9mis par les moteurs diesel et les syst\u00e8mes de chauffage central) r\u00e9duisent le rayonnement thermique infrarouge \u00e9mis par la Terre vers l'espace. En cons\u00e9quence, une quantit\u00e9 importante d'\u00e9nergie suppl\u00e9mentaire s'est accumul\u00e9e dans le syst\u00e8me climatique depuis 1971 \u2013 principalement dans les oc\u00e9ans (89%), et \u00e0 hauteur de 1% dans l'atmosph\u00e8re.<\/span><\/p>\n

Effet \u00e0 long terme<\/h4>\n

\u201c Les syst\u00e8mes de haute pression aliment\u00e9s par des vents plus chauds soufflant au-dessus d'eaux marines plus chaudes disposent de davantage d'\u00e9nergie. Cela signifie donc que, toutes choses \u00e9gales par ailleurs, les conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques habituelles associ\u00e9es \u00e0 une chaleur extr\u00eame sont d\u00e9sormais plus chaudes qu'auparavant. \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Le bilan hydrique est n\u00e9gatif et le sol est tr\u00e8s sec, ce qui entra\u00eene une hausse des temp\u00e9ratures et un risque d'incendies de for\u00eat.\u00a0<\/span>La pollution atmosph\u00e9rique contribue \u00e9galement aux vagues de chaleur : les particules polluantes restent en suspension dans l'air et r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissent la lumi\u00e8re du soleil. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 l'inverse, un air plus pur laisse passer davantage de rayons solaires. Sans compter que les environnements fortement min\u00e9ralis\u00e9s et urbanis\u00e9s retiennent la chaleur plus longtemps, <\/span>ce qui entra\u00eene des nuits plus chaudes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c On n\u2019a donc gu\u00e8re d\u2019autre choix que de s\u2019attaquer au probl\u00e8me et de r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions de CO\u2082 \u201d, d\u00e9clare Pielke Jr. \u201c Mais les effets ne se feront sentir qu\u2019\u00e0 long terme. \u201d\u00a0<\/span>En bref, il fera plus chaud avant de faire plus frais.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inaction injustifi\u00e9e<\/h4>\n

L'ampleur de l'inertie ne devrait en aucun cas servir \u00e0 justifier l'inaction. Une \u00e9tude r\u00e9cente a montr\u00e9 que le fait d'adh\u00e9rer aux arguments en faveur d'un report des mesures climatiques \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9troitement li\u00e9 \u00e0 un soutien moindre aux politiques environnementales.<\/p>\n

Le fait est que nous ne pourrons pas inverser rapidement le r\u00e9chauffement d\u00e9j\u00e0 observ\u00e9, mais nous avons encore une influence consid\u00e9rable sur l'ampleur du r\u00e9chauffement \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n

\u201c Le z\u00e9ro net, c\u2019est un frein, pas la marche arri\u00e8re.
