Ce chiffre peut para\u00eetre technique, mais la cons\u00e9quence est simple : cette technologie de batterie moins co\u00fbteuse, qui domine le march\u00e9 chinois, permet de stocker davantage d'\u00e9nergie par unit\u00e9 de poids, ce qui la rend de plus en plus adapt\u00e9e aux v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques \u00e0 plus grande autonomie, y compris en Europe.<\/p>\n<p>L'expert chinois en batteries Ouyang Minggao a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 cette avanc\u00e9e majeure lors de la Conf\u00e9rence mondiale sur les batteries \u00e9lectriques de 2026, qui s'est tenue \u00e0 Yibin. Les batteries LFP ont traditionnellement privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 la durabilit\u00e9 et une grande stabilit\u00e9 thermique, ainsi qu'un co\u00fbt r\u00e9duit, au d\u00e9triment d'une partie de leur densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. Elles permettent \u00e9galement d'\u00e9viter l'utilisation de nickel et de cobalt, des mat\u00e9riaux relativement co\u00fbteux utilis\u00e9s dans les batteries NMC, qui restent courantes dans les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques europ\u00e9ens.<\/p>\n<p>Pour les automobilistes, une densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e peut se traduire par une autonomie accrue sans pour autant augmenter la taille ni le poids de la batterie \u2013 ou par une autonomie identique avec un bloc de batterie plus petit et moins cher.<\/p>\n<h4>Ce n'est pas une premi\u00e8re mondiale<\/h4>\n<p>Franchir la barre des 200 Wh\/kg n'est pas, en soi, une premi\u00e8re mondiale. CATL avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 annonc\u00e9 en 2024 sa batterie LFP \u00ab Shenxing Plus \u00bb, d'une densit\u00e9 de 205 Wh\/kg. Ce qui est significatif, c'est que la technologie LFP \u00e0 haute densit\u00e9 passe du statut de sp\u00e9cification phare exceptionnelle \u00e0 une utilisation de plus en plus courante.<\/p>\n<p>C'est important car la technologie LFP a d\u00e9j\u00e0 remport\u00e9 la bataille des volumes en Chine. Selon l'Agence internationale de l'\u00e9nergie (AIE), elle repr\u00e9sentait plus de 55% de la demande mondiale de batteries pour v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques en 2025. Dans l'Union europ\u00e9enne, en revanche, sa part ne d\u00e9passait encore qu'un peu plus de 10%.<\/p>\n<p>L'Europe s'appuie donc beaucoup plus sur le NMC, notamment lorsque l'autonomie et la l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 de la batterie sont des priorit\u00e9s. Le NMC offre toujours la densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique maximale la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e, mais l'\u00e9cart concret se r\u00e9duit.<\/p>\n<p>Et cela pourrait bouleverser la rentabilit\u00e9 des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques. Si les batteries LFP parviennent \u00e0 offrir une autonomie suffisante sans devenir trop lourdes, les constructeurs automobiles n'auront plus besoin de payer un suppl\u00e9ment pour des batteries riches en nickel sur autant de mod\u00e8les. C'est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressant pour les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques de petite et moyenne taille, pour lesquels le co\u00fbt de la batterie est d\u00e9terminant.<\/p>\n<h4>L'Europe est d\u00e9j\u00e0 en pleine \u00e9volution<\/h4>\n<p>Ampere, filiale de Renault, a choisi la technologie LFP aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la technologie NMC pour les futurs mod\u00e8les Renault et Alpine. Associ\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception \u00ab cell-to-pack \u00bb, qui permet d'int\u00e9grer davantage de mat\u00e9riau actif dans la batterie tout en conservant le m\u00eame encombrement, ce changement pourrait, selon Ampere, r\u00e9duire le co\u00fbt des batteries d'environ 20% \u00e0 partir de 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis va encore plus loin. En collaboration avec CATL, le groupe construit une grande usine de batteries LFP \u00e0 Saragosse, en Espagne, dont la mise en service est pr\u00e9vue d'ici fin 2026 et dont la capacit\u00e9 pourrait atteindre 50 GWh par an. De son c\u00f4t\u00e9, BYD a plac\u00e9 la technologie LFP au c\u0153ur de ses batteries \u00ab Blade \u00bb et poursuit son expansion en Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a toutefois un b\u00e9mol strat\u00e9gique. Selon l\u2019AIE, la quasi-totalit\u00e9 des batteries LFP utilis\u00e9es par les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques en Europe en 2025 proviendront toujours de Chine, qu\u2019elles soient import\u00e9es sous forme de batteries ou d\u00e9j\u00e0 install\u00e9es dans des voitures fabriqu\u00e9es en Chine. Les fabricants chinois de batteries ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 plus de la moiti\u00e9 de la demande europ\u00e9enne en batteries pour v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Ainsi, l'am\u00e9lioration des performances des batteries LFP ne rend pas automatiquement l'Europe plus ind\u00e9pendante. \u00c0 moins que l'Europe ne mette en place sa propre cha\u00eene d'approvisionnement en mat\u00e9riaux et en cellules, toute avanc\u00e9e dans ce domaine renforce un secteur o\u00f9 la Chine occupe d\u00e9j\u00e0 une position dominante.<\/p>\n<h4>Une production plus rapide et moins co\u00fbteuse<\/h4>\n<p>La conf\u00e9rence de Yibin a \u00e9galement mis en avant une autre avanc\u00e9e en mati\u00e8re de fabrication : des \u00e9quipements automatis\u00e9s capables d\u2019enrouler 7,5 cellules prismatiques par minute, contre une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence de 4,4 cellules. Cela ne signifie pas pour autant que l\u2019ensemble des usines de batteries deviennent soudainement 70% plus rapides, mais cela illustre les efforts men\u00e9s en parall\u00e8le par la Chine pour r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts de fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>Pour les acheteurs europ\u00e9ens, c'est l\u00e0 le message le plus important. La prochaine avanc\u00e9e majeure dans le domaine des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques abordables ne passera peut-\u00eatre pas par les batteries \u00e0 \u00e9tat solide, dont on fait tant de battage. Les batteries LFP classiques deviennent plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res, offrent une plus grande densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique et sont moins co\u00fbteuses \u00e0 fabriquer, tout en conservant leurs avantages en termes de co\u00fbt.<\/p>\n<p>La technologie NMC n'est pas pr\u00e8s de dispara\u00eetre : les voitures haut de gamme et les mod\u00e8les n\u00e9cessitant une autonomie maximale continueront de b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de sa densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e.
