Le Norv\u00e9gien Le g\u00e9ant des engrais Yara a inaugur\u00e9 lundi \u00e0 Sluiskil (Pays-Bas), pr\u00e8s de la fronti\u00e8re belge, la plus grande usine de captage de CO\u2082 d'Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L'objectif est de capter chaque ann\u00e9e jusqu'\u00e0 800 000 tonnes de CO\u2082 issues de sa production d'ammoniac, soit environ 0,5 % des \u00e9missions annuelles totales des Pays-Bas, et de les stocker de mani\u00e8re d\u00e9finitive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette installation vient parachever la premi\u00e8re cha\u00eene de valeur transfrontali\u00e8re \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle industrielle d\u00e9di\u00e9e au captage, au transport et au stockage d\u00e9finitif du CO2.\u00a0<\/span>Le captage et le stockage du carbone (CSC) visent \u00e0 capter le CO\u2082 directement \u00e0 la source. <\/span><\/p>\n

Les exploitants liqu\u00e9fient ensuite le CO\u2082 et le stockent dans sept r\u00e9servoirs d'une capacit\u00e9 totale d'environ 15 000 tonnes sur le site.<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Les navires de Northern Lights transporteront le CO\u2082 captur\u00e9 deux fois par semaine vers un terminal norv\u00e9gien. <\/span><\/p>\n

2 600 m\u00e8tres sous le fond marin<\/h4>\n

Selon une \u00e9tude de Northern Lights, l'empreinte logistique ne repr\u00e9sente \u2018 que \u2019 quelques pour cent. Les \u00e9missions de CO\u2082<\/span> est ensuite inject\u00e9 dans une couche d'eau sal\u00e9e profonde, \u00e0 2 600 m\u00e8tres sous le fond marin.\u00a0<\/span>Le GIEC conclut qu'avec un r\u00e9servoir g\u00e9ologique correctement choisi et g\u00e9r\u00e9, le CO\u2082 capt\u00e9 peut \u00eatre isol\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re permanente de l'atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

La Norv\u00e8ge dispose de plusieurs d\u00e9cennies d'exp\u00e9rience en mati\u00e8re d'injection de CO\u2082 en mer, sur les sites de Sleipner et de Sn\u00f8hvit. La grande incertitude qui p\u00e8se sur le CSC ne r\u00e9side donc pas tant dans la question de savoir si \u201c tous les r\u00e9servoirs finiront-ils par fuir ? \u201d, mais plut\u00f4t dans les co\u00fbts, les infrastructures, l'efficacit\u00e9 du captage et la question de savoir si un nombre suffisant de projets verront r\u00e9ellement le jour.<\/p>\n

Yara devient le premier client commercial de Northern Lights, un consortium regroupant les compagnies p\u00e9troli\u00e8res Equinor, Shell et TotalEnergies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Solution pour les secteurs difficiles \u00e0 d\u00e9carboner<\/h4>\n

La technologie CSC est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par le Groupe d'experts intergouvernemental sur l'\u00e9volution du climat (GIEC) comme l'une des solutions pour les secteurs difficiles \u00e0 d\u00e9carboner, tels que les industries du ciment et de l'acier. Pour l'instant, toutefois, cette technologie reste tr\u00e8s co\u00fbteuse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce qui fait l'importance de Sluiskil, c'est qu'il transforme le CSC en Europe, qui passe d'un ensemble de projets de d\u00e9monstration \u00e0 une activit\u00e9 de services transfrontali\u00e8re \u00e0 caract\u00e8re nettement plus industriel.<\/p>\n

Sluiskil se trouve pour ainsi dire dans l'arri\u00e8re-cour industrielle de la Belgique, au sein du m\u00eame r\u00e9seau portuaire de la mer du Nord que Gand. Il s'agit en effet d'un avant-go\u00fbt des infrastructures dont pourraient \u00e9galement b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier les industries belges du ciment, de la chimie, du raffinage et du traitement des d\u00e9chets.<\/p>\n

Plus important encore, la Belgique et la Norv\u00e8ge ont sign\u00e9 en mars 2026 un accord bilat\u00e9ral visant \u00e0 permettre le transport du CO\u2082 depuis la Belgique vers des sites de stockage norv\u00e9giens.<\/p>\n

Le projet \u00e0 plus long terme consiste en un gazoduc reliant Zeebruges \u00e0 la Norv\u00e8ge, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par Fluxys et Equinor. La Belgique a besoin de sites de stockage \u00e0 l'\u00e9tranger, car elle ne dispose pas de capacit\u00e9s de stockage g\u00e9ologique suffisantes sur son territoire.<\/p>\n

Sluiskil est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 l'un des sites les plus propices au lancement d'un projet de CSC dans le secteur de l'industrie lourde. Le projet de Sluiskil repr\u00e9sente un investissement compris entre 194 et 200 millions d'euros.<\/p>\n

Ammoniac<\/h4>\n

Lorsque le gaz naturel est transform\u00e9 en hydrog\u00e8ne pour la production d'ammoniac par reformage du m\u00e9thane \u00e0 la vapeur, du CO\u2082 est lib\u00e9r\u00e9 sous la forme d'un flux de proc\u00e9d\u00e9 relativement concentr\u00e9. La s\u00e9paration du CO\u2082 fait d\u00e9j\u00e0 partie int\u00e9grante du processus de fabrication conventionnel de l'ammoniac.<\/p>\n

Yara souligne \u00e9galement que les usines d'ammoniac captent, liqu\u00e9fient et traitent le CO\u2082 depuis des d\u00e9cennies pour les serres, les boissons, l'ur\u00e9e et d'autres applications. Le p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre publi\u00e9 pour ce projet de 200 millions d'euros couvre principalement la liqu\u00e9faction, le stockage, le chargement des navires et l'alimentation \u00e9lectrique \u00e0 quai.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 forte consommation d'\u00e9nergie<\/h4>\n

Cependant, le captage du CO\u2082 dilu\u00e9 issu des gaz de combustion des fours \u00e0 ciment ou des aci\u00e9ries est nettement plus complexe et plus gourmand en \u00e9nergie. C\u2019est pourquoi le projet cimentier de Brevik, en Norv\u00e8ge, d\u2019une capacit\u00e9 de 400 000 tonnes, pourrait bien constituer la r\u00e9alisation la plus impressionnante sur le plan technique en mati\u00e8re de captage, m\u00eame si celui de Sluiskil est deux fois plus important.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Agence internationale de l\u2019\u00e9nergie (AIE) estime que les \u00e9missions de CO\u2082 li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nergie et aux proc\u00e9d\u00e9s industriels ont atteint 38,4 milliards de tonnes en 2025. Les 0,8 Mt de Sluiskil repr\u00e9sentent environ 0,0021 TP3T des \u00e9missions mondiales annuelles de CO\u2082, soit environ un cinquante-milli\u00e8me du probl\u00e8me. Cette centrale ne ralentira donc pas de mani\u00e8re notable le r\u00e9chauffement climatique.<\/p>\n

Une goutte dans l'oc\u00e9an mondial<\/h4>\n

Ce projet n\u2019en reste pas moins important, car l\u2019usine de Sluiskil repr\u00e9sente \u00e0 elle seule environ 1,61 TP3T de l\u2019objectif europ\u00e9en de 50 Mt fix\u00e9 pour 2030. C'est en effet un chiffre consid\u00e9rable pour une seule usine. Mais par rapport aux besoins estim\u00e9s par l'UE pour 2040, sa contribution tombe \u00e0 environ 0,31 TP3T. C'est l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side le d\u00e9fi de la mise \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle.<\/p>\n

La Commission europ\u00e9enne estime que l'Europe doit \u00eatre en mesure de capter environ 50 Mt\/an d'ici 2030, 280 Mt\/an d'ici 2040 et 450 Mt\/an d'ici 2050.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 lui seul, Sluiskil n\u2019est qu\u2019une goutte d\u2019eau dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an mondial. Mais le rejeter pour cette raison reviendrait un peu \u00e0 rejeter le premier parc \u00e9olien offshore de 500 MW au motif qu\u2019il ne repr\u00e9sentait qu\u2019une infime fraction de la production mondiale d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Son importance r\u00e9side dans la capacit\u00e9 du mod\u00e8le \u00e0 passer de 0,8 Mt \u00e0 des dizaines, puis \u00e0 des centaines de millions de tonnes par an.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
