L'iX5 Hydrogen de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration fait actuellement l'objet d'essais en conditions r\u00e9elles, tandis que l'assemblage des prototypes, l'industrialisation chez les fournisseurs et les pr\u00e9paratifs de production se d\u00e9roulent en parall\u00e8le.<\/p>\n<p>D'un point de vue technique, BMW d\u00e9montre de plus en plus qu'une voiture particuli\u00e8re fonctionnant \u00e0 l'hydrog\u00e8ne peut \u00eatre viable. La question la plus \u00e9pineuse en 2026 est de savoir si un nombre suffisant de clients en voudront encore une d'ici le lancement de la production en s\u00e9rie en 2028 \u2013 et o\u00f9 ils pourront la ravitailler.<\/p>\n<p>La future X5 \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne sera \u00e9quip\u00e9e du syst\u00e8me de pile \u00e0 combustible de troisi\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de BMW, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 en collaboration avec Toyota.<\/p>\n<p>BMW annonce une autonomie WLTP d'environ 750 kilom\u00e8tres, un ravitaillement en hydrog\u00e8ne en moins de cinq minutes et des performances comparables \u00e0 celles d'un SUV haut de gamme classique.<\/p>\n<p>Sa toute derni\u00e8re architecture de r\u00e9servoir rev\u00eat une importance particuli\u00e8re. Au lieu du syst\u00e8me cylindrique encombrant utilis\u00e9 dans les prototypes pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, BMW a mis au point un syst\u00e8me de stockage d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne nettement plus plat, capable de contenir au moins 7 kg d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>Cela facilite l'int\u00e9gration de la technologie \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des motorisations \u00e9lectriques \u00e0 batterie, hybrides rechargeables, essence et diesel au sein d'une m\u00eame architecture de v\u00e9hicule.<\/p>\n<p>BMW ne se contente pas non plus de mener des travaux en laboratoire. Des \u00e9quipements de production sont en cours d'installation dans son usine de groupes motopropulseurs de Steyr, en Autriche, des prototypes sont assembl\u00e9s \u00e0 Munich, et les employ\u00e9s suivent d'ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 une formation en vue de la future production en s\u00e9rie.<\/p>\n<h4>Un pari sur l'hydrog\u00e8ne de 273 millions d'euros<\/h4>\n<p>L'engagement industriel est consid\u00e9rable, tout comme le soutien public dont il b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie. BMW indique que le gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral allemand alloue 191 millions d'euros dans le cadre du programme europ\u00e9en IPCEI Hy2Move pour le d\u00e9veloppement de technologies de motorisation et de r\u00e9servoirs, la Bavi\u00e8re apportant une contribution suppl\u00e9mentaire de 82 millions d'euros.<\/p>\n<p>L'iX5 Hydrogen constitue donc autant une exp\u00e9rience de politique publique, d'un montant de 273 millions d'euros, qu'une exp\u00e9rience technologique.<\/p>\n<p>Le timing est frappant. Alors que BMW pr\u00e9pare une voiture particuli\u00e8re \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne pour la fin de la d\u00e9cennie, le march\u00e9 europ\u00e9en des voitures \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible a pratiquement disparu.<\/p>\n<h4>4 643 v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne vendus dans le monde entier<\/h4>\n<p>Selon SNE Research, seuls 4 643 v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne ont \u00e9t\u00e9 vendus dans le monde au cours du premier semestre 2026. Hyundai s'est impos\u00e9 avec 3 337 unit\u00e9s, tandis que Toyota n'en a vendu que 306 et Honda 79.<\/p>\n<p>L'Europe n'a immatricul\u00e9 que 14 v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible au cours de la m\u00eame p\u00e9riode. \u00c0 titre de comparaison, les immatriculations de voitures \u00e9lectriques \u00e0 batterie dans l'UE ont d\u00e9pass\u00e9 le million deux cent mille.<\/p>\n<p>La situation en mati\u00e8re d'infrastructures n'est gu\u00e8re plus encourageante. H2 Mobility, l'op\u00e9rateur du plus grand r\u00e9seau allemand de stations-service \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne, a proc\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 la fermeture de petites stations de 700 bars tout en r\u00e9orientant ses investissements vers des sites destin\u00e9s aux bus et aux v\u00e9hicules utilitaires.<\/p>\n<p>Cela cr\u00e9e une contradiction g\u00eanante : BMW se lance dans la production en s\u00e9rie d\u2019une voiture particuli\u00e8re haut de gamme fonctionnant \u00e0 700 bars, alors que le r\u00e9seau de ravitaillement en hydrog\u00e8ne le plus d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 d\u2019Europe se concentre de plus en plus sur le transport lourd.<\/p>\n<h4>Un cercle de fid\u00e8les de plus en plus restreint<\/h4>\n<p>Mais BMW n'est pas tout \u00e0 fait seule. Toyota reste son partenaire technologique le plus proche et continue de d\u00e9velopper des voitures particuli\u00e8res \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 des applications commerciales.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai est sans doute le plus fervent d\u00e9fenseur de cette technologie : sa Nexo de deuxi\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration offre une autonomie de plus de 800 km selon le cycle WLTP et peut \u00eatre recharg\u00e9e en environ cinq minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Honda est toujours de la partie, mais avec plus de prudence. Son CR-V e:FCEV associe l'hydrog\u00e8ne \u00e0 une batterie rechargeable, tandis que le constructeur d\u00e9veloppe actuellement une technologie de pile \u00e0 combustible de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration plus abordable.<\/p>\n<p>Parall\u00e8lement, Honda a d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9duit certains de ses investissements dans l'hydrog\u00e8ne, les attentes du march\u00e9 s'\u00e9tant affaiblies.<\/p>\n<p>D'autres ont tir\u00e9 des conclusions bien plus s\u00e9v\u00e8res. Stellantis a abandonn\u00e9 son programme de d\u00e9veloppement des piles \u00e0 combustible en 2025, estimant que l'hydrog\u00e8ne n'offrait pas de perspective cr\u00e9dible de viabilit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique \u00e0 moyen terme.<\/p>\n<p>General Motors a par la suite mis fin au d\u00e9veloppement de sa nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de piles \u00e0 combustible Hydrotec et a r\u00e9orient\u00e9 ses ressources vers les batteries et la recharge.<\/p>\n<h4>Miser sur une option, pas sur une r\u00e9volution<\/h4>\n<p>L'inconv\u00e9nient fondamental de l'hydrog\u00e8ne par rapport aux batteries n'a pas disparu. Produire de l'hydrog\u00e8ne vert par \u00e9lectrolyse, le comprimer et le transporter, le reconvertir en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 dans une pile \u00e0 combustible et, enfin, alimenter un moteur \u00e9lectrique n\u00e9cessite nettement plus d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 issue de sources renouvelables que la recharge directe d'une batterie.<\/p>\n<p>L'hydrog\u00e8ne vert reste lui-m\u00eame rare et co\u00fbteux. La strat\u00e9gie de BMW s'explique donc peut-\u00eatre moins comme un pari sur le fait que l'hydrog\u00e8ne remplacera les batteries, mais plut\u00f4t comme un pari sur une future \u00e9conomie de l'hydrog\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>Son architecture automobile modulable limite les risques ; Toyota prend en charge une partie des co\u00fbts de d\u00e9veloppement, tandis que le financement public couvre une autre partie de ces co\u00fbts.<\/p>\n<h4>Infrastructures pour les poids lourds<\/h4>\n<p>Surtout, les infrastructures d\u00e9di\u00e9es \u00e0 l'hydrog\u00e8ne pourraient encore conna\u00eetre une croissance significative pour les camions, les bus, le transport maritime et l'industrie. La r\u00e9glementation europ\u00e9enne impose la mise en place de stations \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne le long du r\u00e9seau routier central du RTE-T d'ici 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Si ce r\u00e9seau venait \u00e0 se d\u00e9velopper pour le transport lourd, des voitures particuli\u00e8res telles que la BMW X5 pourraient en profiter. Cela pourrait permettre \u00e0 l'hydrog\u00e8ne de jouer un r\u00f4le modeste pour les conducteurs qui ont besoin d'une grande autonomie, d'un ravitaillement rapide ou qui doivent fr\u00e9quemment tracter des remorques.<\/p>\n<p>Mais cela est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent de devenir le troisi\u00e8me type de motorisation courant pour les voitures particuli\u00e8res, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des batteries et des moteurs \u00e0 combustion.<\/p>\n<p>BMW n'a cess\u00e9 de d\u00e9montrer qu'un X5 \u00e0 hydrog\u00e8ne pouvait fonctionner.
