Waco, Texas, proved an almost appropriately named location for Tesla's long-awaited Roadster unveiling on 15 October. The city's name sounds remarkably similar to the English slang term 'wacko'.<\/p>\n

And what Musk demonstrated at the nearby SpaceX facilities certainly was 'crazy' and stretched conventional ideas of what a car should be capable of.<\/p>\n

Trois versions, trois r\u00e9alit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes<\/h4>\n

Tesla pr\u00e9voit d\u00e9sormais trois versions du Roadster. Le mod\u00e8le Performance biplace promet une acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration de 0 \u00e0 60 mph (97 km\/h) en moins de 1,6 seconde, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une a\u00e9rodynamique active et \u00e0 un syst\u00e8me d'aspiration permettant de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer une force d'appui extraordinaire.<\/p>\n

La version \u00ab Thrust \u00bb int\u00e8gre des propulseurs \u00e0 gaz froid mont\u00e9s \u00e0 l'arri\u00e8re, qui permettraient de r\u00e9duire ce temps \u00e0 moins de 0,9 seconde. Une version encore plus extr\u00eame, la \u00ab Rocket \u00bb, monoplace, promet un temps inf\u00e9rieur \u00e0 0,59 seconde, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des propulseurs suppl\u00e9mentaires qui permettent \u00e0 la voiture de d\u00e9coller et d'effectuer des rotations en plein vol.<\/p>\n

Ce dernier chiffre correspond \u00e0 une acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration moyenne sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 4,6 fois la force de gravit\u00e9. On ignore encore si des conducteurs lambda pourraient supporter confortablement de telles forces, et si cette performance est reproductible.<\/p>\n

Aucun de ces chiffres n'a \u00e9t\u00e9 v\u00e9rifi\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re ind\u00e9pendante sur un v\u00e9hicule de s\u00e9rie. Tesla annonce une autonomie sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 300 miles (483 km), mais n'a communiqu\u00e9 ni la capacit\u00e9 de la batterie ni les performances de recharge.<\/p>\n

Neuf ans de cibles mouvantes<\/h4>\n

The car has been orbiting the Sun ever since. Almost nine years later, the second-generation Roadster still hasn't reached customers on Earth.<\/p>\n

Tout le monde ne pourra pas acheter le Roadster pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au Texas. Alors que la version \u00ab Performance \u00bb, plus classique, est d\u00e9j\u00e0 disponible \u00e0 la r\u00e9servation et destin\u00e9e \u00e0 la circulation sur la voie publique, la version \u00ab Thrust \u00bb, plus extr\u00eame, ne sera produite qu\u2019en nombre limit\u00e9, et son homologation pour la circulation routi\u00e8re reste incertaine.<\/p>\n

Tesla's last driver's car?<\/h4>\n

Perhaps the greatest irony is that Musk describes the Roadster as one of Tesla's last great human-driven cars, while simultaneously positioning the company as an artificial-intelligence and robotics business increasingly focused on self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n

The Roadster may therefore become a technological halo car, designed to restore some of Tesla's reputation for innovation as competition intensifies in the mainstream electric vehicle market.<\/p>\n

Pour autant, des d\u00e9monstrations impressionnantes ne se traduisent pas automatiquement par des produits viables. Tesla doit encore prouver, par des mesures de performances ind\u00e9pendantes, la fiabilit\u00e9 sur route, la faisabilit\u00e9 commerciale et le respect de ses engagements de livraison.<\/p>\n
