Volgens EU-Commissievoorzitter Ursula von der Leyen zou Brussel de CO2-doelstelling voor autofabrikanten in 2025 kunnen afzwakken. Ze houdt ook een nieuwe accusubsidie in het vooruitzicht. Ze legde uit dat ze wilde dat fabrikanten de CO2-doelstelling in de komende drie jaar zouden halen in plaats van dit jaar, zoals aanvankelijk gepland, op voorwaarde dat het Parlement en de lidstaten akkoord zouden gaan.<\/p>

Sommigen riepen al enige tijd dat de CO2-limieten voor het wagenpark zouden moeten worden afgezwakt om autofabrikanten, die onder economische druk staan, mogelijke miljardenboetes te besparen als ze de doelstellingen niet halen. Een mogelijkheid die al vroeg in het spel kwam, was dat de CO2-doelstelling zelf van kracht zou blijven, maar dat fabrikanten eventuele overschrijdingen in 2025 zouden kunnen compenseren met toekomstige onderschrijdingen.<\/p>
