De baanbrekende waterstofvondst in het noordoosten van Frankrijk vorig jaar wakkert de interesse in een lang vergeten bron van schone energie - natuurlijke waterstof - weer aan. Op een moment dat het inzetten op waterstof voor transport ernstig van de baan is, zijn wetenschappers begonnen met het in kaart brengen van enorme hoeveelheden ontginbare waterstof en hebben ze de uitdagingen voor exploitatiemethoden uiteengezet.<\/p>

Verscholen onder de voormalige steenkoolstad Folschviller legden wetenschappers naar schatting 46 miljoen ton waterstofgas bloot. Zulke getallen lijken misschien vaag, maar in perspectief gezien is dit volume groot genoeg om te voldoen aan meer dan de helft van de huidige jaarlijkse vraag naar industri\u00eble waterstof, de grootste gebruiker ter wereld.
