VW speelt naar verluidt met het idee van een bijzonder krachtige ID.2 R, die het eerste model van het merk zou kunnen worden met vierwielaandrijving met behulp van motoren in de wielen. Als VW groen licht geeft, zou de ID.2 R boven de reeds bevestigde ID.2 R komen te staan. ID.2 GTI<\/a> in de line-up en mogelijk zelfs tegen de limited edition Renault 5 Turbo 3E<\/a>.<\/p>

De ID.2 is gebaseerd op het MEB Small-platform, dat voorwielaandrijving ondersteunt. Maar, zo meldt het Britse automagazine Autocar op basis van ingewijde bronnen, VW onderzoekt momenteel de mogelijkheid om het systeem uit te breiden naar vierwielaandrijving dankzij achterin geplaatste wielmotoren, specifiek in combinatie met de ID.2 R.
