Brussels Airlines heeft voor het derde jaar op rij winst geboekt. Toch halveerde het aangepaste bedrijfsresultaat (EBIT) tot 28 miljoen euro, deels door nationale vakbondsacties die het vliegverkeer zeven keer verstoorden, wat de luchtvaartmaatschappij 15 miljoen euro kostte, evenals waarnemingen van drones en een cyberaanval op Brussels Airport. Een nieuwe verstoring is al onderweg, met een nieuwe nationale staking aangekondigd voor 12 maart.<\/p>\n

Hierdoor boekte de luchtvaartmaatschappij een winst (voor belastingen) van \u20ac3 per passagier, vergeleken met \u20ac7 in 2024. \u201cWe hadden veel meer groei verwacht, maar die is uitgebleven,\u201d zei Dorothea von Boxberg<\/span><\/span>, CEO van Brussel Airlines<\/span><\/span>, over de \u201cteleurstellende\u201d resultaten voor 2025, hoewel ze ook vooruitkijkt: \u201cOperationele betrouwbaarheid is de grootste zorg dit jaar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Problemen met langeafstandsvliegtuigen<\/h4>\n

In 2025 voerde Brussels Airlines meer dan 68.500 vluchten uit, 11% meer dan het jaar daarvoor. Het aantal passagiers steeg bijna even sterk (+10%) tot meer dan 9,1 miljoen. De inkomsten stegen met 7% tot 1,6 miljard euro, maar door \u201cverschillende tegenwinden\u201d, zoals hierboven opgesomd, bedroeg de winst de helft van die van 2024.<\/p>\n

Daarnaast had de langeafstandsvloot te lijden onder verschillende operationele incidenten. Verschillende vliegtuigen werden soms langer dan gepland aan de grond gehouden vanwege gepland en ongepland onderhoud of problemen met motoren en reserveonderdelen.<\/p>\n

Dit kostte uiteindelijk 19 miljoen euro, deels omdat de luchtvaartmaatschappij een langeafstandsvliegtuig extern huurde om de problemen tegen te gaan.<\/p>\n

Een andere grote kostenpost waren de \u201conregelmatigheidskosten\u201d. Dit zijn de kosten die Brussels Airlines moet verzekeren bij annuleringen en vertragingen om passagiers te compenseren, om te boeken, overnachtingen aan te bieden, enz. Vorig jaar bedroegen deze 41 miljoen euro, of gemiddeld 4,5 euro per passagier.<\/p>\n

Er is een winstmarge van 8% nodig<\/h4>\n

\u201cOndanks enkele grote tegenslagen was Brussels Airlines winstgevend in 2025\u201d, zegt CEO Von Boxberg. \u201cDit toont aan dat Brussels Airlines stabiel is en tegen een paar stoten kan. Maar we hebben hogere ambities: we hebben fondsen nodig om te investeren in vlootvernieuwing, productverbeteringen en de connectiviteit van Belgi\u00eb.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brussels Airlines heeft herhaaldelijk verklaard dat een operationele winstmarge van 8% nodig is om deze investeringen te financieren. Die winstmarge daalde vorig jaar echter tot 1,7%, tegenover 3,8% in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201c2025 was duidelijk een stap terug\u201d, zei CFO Nina \u00d6werdieck. \u201cHet doel blijft echter onveranderd en we zullen er alles aan doen om in 2026 weer op schema te komen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Er zijn verschillende gerichte initiatieven uitgerold om de veerkracht van de financi\u00eble en operationele resultaten te versterken, zoals een \u201cverbeterplan\u201d om vertragingen en annuleringen te voorkomen.<\/p>\n

Stipter vliegen<\/h4>\n

\u201cWe moeten ervoor zorgen dat we betrouwbaar en punctueel vliegen,\u201d zegt Von Boxberg. Dit betekent bijvoorbeeld extra aandacht besteden aan de eerste vlucht van de dag.<\/p>\n

\u201cAls we die op tijd kunnen afhandelen, hebben we een veel betere kans dat de rest van de dag ook soepel verloopt\u201d, aldus de CEO. Daarnaast worden zaken als het laden van vliegtuigen, het instappen van passagiers en het onderhoud van vliegtuigen onderzocht om vertragingen in die processen te verminderen.<\/p>\n

Brussels Airlines neemt dit jaar ook een 7e en 8e Airbus A320neo in ontvangst voor haar korte- en middellangeafstandsvloot. In juni gaat de nieuwe langeafstandsbestemming Kilimanjaro in Tanzania van start. En het eerste vliegtuig van de maatschappij zal dit jaar uitgerust worden met Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n

Oneerlijke concurrentie met Charleroi<\/h4>\n

Tegelijkertijd klaagt Brussels Airlines opnieuw over het ongelijke speelveld met Charleroi Airport, ook bekend als Brussels South. \u201cEen passagier die vanaf Brussels Airport wil vliegen, betaalt 34 euro meer aan kosten dan op Charleroi Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Het verschil heeft te maken met verschillende kosten, zoals luchthavenbelasting, beveiligingskosten en de terminalnavigatieheffing. Die laatste is het bedrag dat de verkeersleiders op Skeyes ontvangen per vertrekkend vliegtuig. Op Brussels Airport moeten de luchtvaartmaatschappijen een deel van dat bedrag betalen, terwijl op Charleroi de overheid het volledige bedrag voor haar rekening neemt. Hierdoor is Brussels Airlines in het nadeel ten opzichte van Ryanair, de grootste speler op Charleroi.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe willen dezelfde regels voor dezelfde luchthavens,\u201d zegt Von Boxberg. De uitleg dat Charleroi subsidies krijgt omdat het een regionale luchthaven is, gaat volgens haar niet meer op. \u201cMet meer dan 10 miljoen passagiers is Charleroi niet langer een regionale luchthaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of Brussels Airport te veel betaalt of de luchtvaartmaatschappijen in Charleroi te weinig, is voor Von Boxberg niet het belangrijkste. \u201cEr moet een gelijk speelveld zijn, daar gaat het om.\u201d In dat opzicht is Brussels Airlines niet helemaal ontevreden met de aangekondigde verhoging van de federale vliegtaks<\/a>, omdat het \u201cvoor alle passagiers hetzelfde zal zijn en het dus een beetje eerlijker maakt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deze ontevredenheid over de situatie in Charleroi is niet nieuw. In 2023 diende Brussels Airlines een offici\u00eble klacht in bij de Europese Commissie tegen de \u201cillegale staatssteun\u201d die Charleroi Airport ontvangt. De maatschappij zegt nog geen antwoord te hebben ontvangen.<\/p>\n

Recordomzet van \u20ac39,6 miljard voor Lufthansa<\/h4>\n

Moedermaatschappij Lufthansa, waartoe ook luchtvaartmaatschappijen als Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines en Eurowings behoren, maakte ook haar jaarresultaten bekend. De groep behaalde een recordomzet van 39,6 miljard euro (+5%). De aangepaste EBIT steeg met een vijfde tot 2 miljard euro.<\/p>\n

De groep vervoerde vorig jaar 135 miljoen passagiers, 3% meer dan in 2024. Lufthansa Group hoopt de omzet en winst dit jaar verder op te krikken. Het voegt er echter aan toe dat de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten een onzekere factor is die bijvoorbeeld kan leiden tot hogere kerosineprijzen.<\/p>\n

Meer werknemers van Brussels Airport kiezen voor de fiets naar het werk<\/h4>\n

En nog iets: steeds meer werknemers van Brussels Airport en omliggende bedrijven kiezen voor de fiets voor hun woon-werkverkeer.<\/p>\n

De teller richting Terminal registreerde bijvoorbeeld 69.948 fietsers, een stijging van 20%. \u201cBrussels Airport stelt ongeveer 30.000 mensen tewerk. Het is fantastisch om te zien dat meer collega's ervoor kiezen om met de fiets naar het werk te komen\u201d, zegt Christel Vandenhouten, Head of Sustainable Development bij Brussels Airport.<\/p>\n

De toename van het fietsen is mede te danken aan fietsmanager Steven Fagard, die de afgelopen jaren samen met de teams van Brussels Airport werkte aan maatregelen om fietsen van en naar de luchthaven aantrekkelijker te maken. Fagard werd in maart 2023 aangesteld in het kader van het Stargate-project van Brussels Airport, een Europees Green Deal-project in samenwerking met de provincie Vlaams-Brabant.
