Het Franse energiebedrijf TotalEnergies schrapt twee grote offshore windprojecten in de Verenigde Staten. In ruil daarvoor krijgt het bedrijf bijna $1 miljard van de Amerikaanse overheid, op voorwaarde dat de fondsen<\/span> opnieuw ge\u00efnvesteerd in projecten voor fossiele brandstoffen in het land. De regering van Donald Trump en TotalEnergies kondigden de deal maandag aan tijdens CERAWeek, de jaarlijkse conferentie voor de energie-industrie in Houston, Texas<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Olie- en gasactiviteiten<\/h4>\n

De twee geplande windparken, met een totale capaciteit van meer dan vier gigawatt, zouden worden ge\u00efnstalleerd voor de kust van New York en North Carolina. In 2022, onder de regering van voormalig president Joe Biden, betaalde TotalEnergies meer dan $928 miljoen voor deze projecten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Er is nu een overeenkomst bereikt met het Amerikaanse ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken om deze investeringen stop te zetten. <\/span>De Amerikaanse overheid zal het volledige bedrag terugbetalen, waarna TotalEnergies zich ertoe verbindt om later dit jaar hetzelfde bedrag te investeren in Amerikaanse olie- en gasactiviteiten in Texas en de Golf van Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Nieuwe overwinning\u2019<\/h4>\n

Het is algemeen bekend dat de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump geen voorstander is van windenergie. Hij heeft eerder al verschillende offshore projecten geannuleerd. <\/span>Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Doug Burgum noemt de deal met TotalEnergies \u201ceen nieuwe overwinning\u201d voor de strategie van Trump. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Windenergie op zee is een van de duurste, onbetrouwbaarste, milieuverstorendste en subsidie-afhankelijke projecten die ooit aan het Amerikaanse volk zijn opgelegd,\u201d zei hij.<\/span><\/p>\n

TotalEnergies is tot de conclusie gekomen dat \u201coffshore wind niet de goedkoopste methode is om elektriciteit op te wekken\u201d in de Verenigde Staten, aldus CEO Patrick Pouyann\u00e9. TotalEnergies stopt daarom haar investeringen in Amerikaanse windenergie \u201comdat dergelijke projecten momenteel niet in het belang van het land zijn.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Tegelijkertijd benadrukt hij dat de beslissing geen invloed heeft op de ambities van de groep in andere landen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Polarisatie<\/h4>\n

Donald Trump is al lang tegen offshore windprojecten. <\/span>Zijn regering heeft actief projecten voor hernieuwbare energie geblokkeerd of afgebroken. Met deze financi\u00eble regeling lijkt de Amerikaanse overheid nu een alternatieve strategie te hebben gevonden om de ontwikkeling van offshore windenergie af te remmen.<\/span><\/p>\n

In de Verenigde Staten zijn de reacties verdeeld. Sommigen - voornamelijk conservatieven - zijn pro-fossiele brandstof omdat ze het goedkoper en betrouwbaarder vinden, dus steunen ze het besluit van de regering.<\/p>\n
