De witte waterstofbel werd drie jaar geleden ontdekt, maar is nu pas aangeboord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">T<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">e waterstofbel zou zich uitstrekken tot in Belgi\u00eb,<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\"> Luxemburg en Duitsland, en bevatten 34 miljoen ton waterstof.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Volgens de onderzoekers is het mogelijk 's werelds grootste natuurlijke waterstofreservoir. Op dit moment wordt er onderzoek gedaan naar het meten van concentraties en het testen van extractie- en scheidingstechnologie\u00ebn.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Soorten waterstof<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Waterstof is een energiedrager en wordt normaal gesproken bijvoorbeeld geproduceerd door elektrolyse van water. Natuurlijke waterstof - ook wel \u2018witte\u2019 of \u2018natuurlijke\u2019 waterstof genoemd - wordt echter niet geproduceerd, maar is van nature aanwezig in de aardbodem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Andere soorten zijn grijze waterstof, gemaakt van aardgas, dat goedkoop is maar erg vervuilend; blauwe waterstof, geproduceerd met CO2-afvang, dat minder vervuilend is maar nog steeds fossiel; en groene waterstof, gemaakt met duurzame elektriciteit, dat schoon maar duur is.<\/p>\n<h4>Belangrijk knooppunt voor waterstof<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Natuurlijke waterstofvelden zijn zeer zeldzaam. \u201cDeze ontdekking is echt belangrijk voor de industrie\u201d, zegt Jan Rong\u00e9, CEO van Solhyd, een Belgisch bedrijf dat waterstof produceert met behulp van zonne-energie. \u201cHet kan Europa helpen minder afhankelijk te worden van aardgas uit het buitenland, <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">wat strategisch belangrijk is.\u201d Bovendien maakt de nabijheid het bijzonder interessant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Op dit moment is Europa sterk afhankelijk van ge\u00efmporteerde fossiele brandstoffen. Deze bron zou de afhankelijkheid van de import van aardgas en toekomstige import van waterstof kunnen verminderen. Lokaal gewonnen waterstof zou de productiekosten kunnen verlagen en de industrie in Europa kunnen houden. Belgi\u00eb, met zijn petrochemische cluster in de haven van Antwerpen, zou een belangrijk waterstofknooppunt kunnen worden en over heel Europa kunnen distribueren.<\/p>\n<h4>Een derde van de wereldwijde consumptie<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Wereldwijd wordt er pas sinds een paar jaar intensief gezocht naar natuurlijke waterstofvelden. Dit is het grootste veld dat tot nu toe met enige zekerheid is gevonden.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Huidige schattingen spreken van ongeveer 34 miljoen ton waterstof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Dat komt overeen met ongeveer een derde van het wereldwijde jaarlijkse waterstofverbruik, wat echt aanzienlijk is. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Jaarlijks wordt wereldwijd ongeveer 100 miljoen ton waterstof verbruikt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Technische en logistieke uitdagingen<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Eerste schattingen geven aan dat de kosten van witte waterstof dicht bij die van fossiele waterstof zouden liggen, maar de uiteindelijke prijs hangt sterk af van de moeilijkheidsgraad van de winning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Er zullen nog nieuwe technieken moeten worden ontwikkeld om geologische waterstof op industri\u00eble schaal te winnen en te gebruiken. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De winning van witte waterstof zal nog heel wat technische en logistieke uitdagingen met zich meebrengen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Duurzaamheid is ook niet vanzelfsprekend: het blijft een gas dat uit de grond wordt gehaald en de impact op het milieu hangt af van hoe effici\u00ebnt en gecontroleerd het proces wordt uitgevoerd.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Veelzijdig element<\/h4>\n<p>Waterstof is essentieel voor moeilijk te elektrificeren sectoren, zoals staal, chemie, scheepvaart en luchtvaart.\u00a0<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Voor transport en verwarming lijkt waterstof te zijn ingehaald door de snelle evolutie van onder andere batterijen en elektrische systemen. Het is echter een veelzijdig element dat op grote schaal in de industrie wordt gebruikt om chemicali\u00ebn te produceren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Tegenwoordig halen we waterstof voornamelijk uit aardgas (methaan), maar dit proces stoot veel CO2 uit. Een koolstofvrije bron van waterstof zou daarom zeer welkom zijn.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Wat is waterstof precies? <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Waterstof is een kleurloos en reukloos gas. Het is het kleinste en lichtste van alle chemische elementen.
