Om 2:00 uur 's nachts wordt de klok een uur vooruit gezet, waardoor het nu 3:00 uur 's nachts is, wat betekent dat we een uur minder slaap krijgen.<\/p>\n<p>Maar chauffeurs, opgelet: dat ene gestolen uurtje slaap kan ook een verrassend grote impact hebben op de verkeersveiligheid, waarschuwt het Waals Agentschap voor Verkeersveiligheid (AWSR).<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cJetlag-effect<\/h4>\n<p>De omschakeling naar zomertijd betekent dat het 's avonds een uur langer licht blijft en dat de zon een uur later lijkt op te komen, maar het heeft ook invloed op je lichaamsklok.<\/p>\n<p>Omdat we een uur slaap verliezen, staan we die eerste maandagochtend vaak nog een beetje \u201cgroggy\u201d in het verkeer, terwijl ons lichaam denkt dat het nog een uur vroeger is. En juist tijdens het woon-werkverkeer 's ochtends kan het risico op ongelukken toenemen door slaperigheid of vermoeidheid.<\/p>\n<p>Omdat het een uur later licht is, maakt het verminderde zicht - vooral tijdens de drukke ochtendspits - het bovendien moeilijker om kwetsbare weggebruikers te zien. De combinatie van duisternis en vermoeidheid kan het risico op een ongeval tijdens de ochtendspits dus verhogen.<\/p>\n<h4>Niet of te laat remmen<\/h4>\n<p>Op Waalse wegen wordt ongeveer 1 op 6 dodelijke ongevallen veroorzaakt door slaperigheid, en maar liefst 1 op 4 op snelwegen. Slaperigheid vermindert de alertheid en verhoogt het risico om achter het stuur in slaap te vallen - het be\u00efnvloedt de hersenen op dezelfde manier als een laag alcoholpromillage. Een slaperige bestuurder kan bijvoorbeeld niet of te laat remmen en geen uitwijkmanoeuvre uitvoeren, waardoor de kracht van de botsing toeneemt.<\/p>\n<p>Het risico op een ongeval is ook 8 keer hoger als je niet genoeg hebt geslapen of meerdere nachten achter elkaar maar 5 uur hebt geslapen, in vergelijking met een bestuurder die 8 uur heeft geslapen.<\/p>\n<h4>Meezingen<\/h4>\n<p>Het agentschap dringt er daarom bij bestuurders op aan om hun rijgedrag aan te passen en extra waakzaam te zijn op de weg tijdens deze overgangsperiode: verminder de snelheid, wees extra voorzichtig op kruispunten en controleer de verlichting van het voertuig. Houd meer afstand tot de auto voor je; je reactietijd is niet optimaal.<\/p>\n<p>Voor voetgangers en fietsers benadrukt het AWSR het belang van het dragen van reflecterende kleding en het voeren van verlichting op fietsen of e-scooters.<\/p>\n<p>Plus: probeer in de dagen na de tijdsverandering 15 tot 30 minuten eerder naar bed te gaan om het slaaptekort in te halen.<\/p>\n<p>Het autoraam een beetje open laten staan of water drinken kan je wakker houden, net als de radio een beetje harder zetten of meezingen als je merkt dat je wegdommelt. Actief meezingen houdt je hersenen alerter dan passief luisteren naar een podcast of het nieuws.<\/p>\n<p>Als je op zoek bent naar suggesties voor een liedje waar je hart sneller van gaat kloppen, dan is er natuurlijk \u201cGood Morning\u201d van Kanye West of The Dandy Warhols, \u201cHere Comes the Sun\u201d van The Beatles of \u201cTime\u201d van Pink Floyd - die wekkers gaan af! - Maar je wordt ook gegarandeerd wakker van \u201cTrinidad\u201d van Geese, deels omdat zanger Cameron Winter herhaaldelijk \u201cThere's a bomb in my car!\u201d schreeuwt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Krachtdutje<\/h4>\n<p>Maar in elk geval kan meezingen helpen voorkomen dat je meteen in slaap valt omdat het fysiek actief is, maar het neemt cognitieve vermoeidheid niet weg.<\/p>\n<p>Als je merkt dat je ogen zwaar worden of je concentratie verslapt, is er volgens de AWSR en het VIAS Instituut maar \u00e9\u00e9n echte oplossing: het powernapje. Slaap 15 tot 20 minuten, maar niet langer, anders val je in een diepe slaap en word je nog suf wakker.<\/p>\n<p>En neem een kop koffie voordat je gaat slapen. De cafe\u00efne heeft ongeveer 20 minuten nodig om in je bloedbaan te komen. Tegen de tijd dat je wakker wordt uit je powernap, geeft de cafe\u00efne je een extra boost.
