Op de New York International Auto Show zijn de World Car Awards voor 2026 bekendgemaakt. Het was de 22e keer dat een auto de titel World Car of the Year kreeg en dit jaar was het de nieuwe BMW iX3, de eerste van de \u2018Neue Klasse\u2019, die won.<\/p>\n

De World Car Awards zijn nog niet zo oud als de prijs voor Europese Auto van het Jaar, die dit jaar op het Autosalon van Brussel werd uitgereikt aan de Mercedes CLA. Er zijn ook andere verschillen.<\/p>\n

Waar de Europese COTY-jury zich beperkt tot \u00e9\u00e9n prijs, DE auto van het jaar, hebben de 98 juryleden uit 33 landen bij de World Car Award meerdere prijzen in verschillende categorie\u00ebn. Als gepensioneerd COTY-jurylid kan ik zeggen dat het veel makkelijker is om uit verschillende categorie\u00ebn te kiezen, en het is ook veel vriendelijker voor fabrikanten, waardoor ze meer kansen hebben om te winnen.<\/p>\n

Uitmuntend<\/h4>\n

De winnaar van dit jaar, de iX3<\/a>, combineert twee categorie\u00ebn, wat logisch is als het een elektrische auto is. Het zou heel vreemd zijn als een elektrische auto genomineerd zou zijn als beste auto ter wereld, hij zou ook niet de titel van beste elektrische auto ter wereld winnen.<\/p>\n

De titel bevestigt dat BMW's eerste auto in de \u2018Neue Klasse\u2019 line-up een echte hit is. Dat lijkt te worden bevestigd in de markt, want BMW voelde zich al verplicht om de geplande productievolumes te verhogen om aan de vraag te blijven voldoen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

De andere prijzen<\/h4>\n

De andere prijzen zijn als volgt verdeeld. De World Luxury Car Award gaat voor de tweede keer naar het merk Lucid, met de Lucid Gravity. De auto werd gekozen uit een lijst van acht kanshebbers; de top drie bestond uit de Lucid Gravity, de Cadillac Vistiq en de Volvo ES90.<\/p>\n

De World Performance Car van 2026 is de Hyundai Ioniq 6 N. Het is de tweede keer dat Hyundai deze titel wint, terwijl het broertje van de Ioniq 6 N, de Ioniq 5 N, in 2024 won. De top drie, gekozen uit 20 kanshebbers, bestond uit de BMW M2 CS, de Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray en natuurlijk de winnaar, de Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.<\/p>\n

De World Urban Car award ging naar een nieuw Chinees merk, Nio. De Firefly moest vijf kanshebbers in zijn categorie voor laten gaan. De top drie bestond uit de Chevrolet Spark EUV (ook verkocht als Baojun Yep Plus), de Nio Firefly en de Hyundai Venue.<\/p>\n

Last but not least is er de winnaar voor het beste autodesign. De World Car Design of the Year Award gaat naar de Mazda 6e (ook verkocht als EZ6). In deze categorie werd een panel van zeven gerespecteerde designexperts gevraagd om een shortlist samen te stellen uit de ruim 90 kanshebbers. De uiteindelijke top drie bestond uit de Kia PV5, de Mazda 6e en de Volvo ES90.<\/p>\n

Het is al de derde World Car design award voor Mazda en een echte bevestiging voor het goede werk dat de Belgische ontwerper Jo Stenuit doet als Mazda's Design Director voor Europa, ge\u00efnspireerd door het werk van de Japanse designchef. Ikuo Maeda, bekend als de architect van Mazda's gewaardeerde \u2018Kodo-Soul of Motion\u2019 designtaal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Een laatste, opmerkelijke prestatie: in alle categorie\u00ebn was het een volledig elektrische auto die won. Om de auto-industrie en haar CEO's nog meer te plezieren, is er ook een zevende World Car Award, een voor de \u2018Car Person of the Year\u2019. Om de triomf van BMW compleet te maken, is deze dit jaar gewonnen door de vertrekkende CEO van BMW, Oliver Zipse.<\/p>\n
