Hogere prijzen voor vliegtickets zijn onvermijdelijk. Dat zei Willie Walsh, CEO van de International Air Transport Association (IATA), tijdens een bijeenkomst in Singapore. Zelfs na een staakt-het-vuren in Iran.<\/p>\n

Volgens Walsh zal de luchtvaartindustrie waarschijnlijk nog maanden te maken krijgen met onderbrekingen in de levering van vliegtuigbrandstof, zelfs als Iran de Straat van Hormuz heropent of meer schepen doorlaat.<\/p>\n

Daardoor zal vliegtuigbrandstof voorlopig duurder blijven dan voor het uitbreken van het Iran-conflict.<\/p>\n

Bijna 1 miljard liter per dag<\/h4>\n

Sinds het uitbreken van het Iran-conflict worstelen luchtvaartmaatschappijen wereldwijd met brandstofkosten die meer dan verdubbeld zijn. Bovendien hebben verschillende luchtvaartmaatschappijen vluchten geannuleerd vanwege dreigende tekorten aan kerosine in sommige regio's.<\/p>\n

Nadat de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump had gezegd dat hij had ingestemd met een staakt-het-vuren van twee weken met Iran, daalde de olieprijs woensdag tot onder de $100 per vat - eerder op dinsdag was dit ruim boven de $117 geweest.<\/p>\n

Maar zelfs als olietankers weer door de Straat van Hormuz kunnen varen, waar normaal gesproken ongeveer een vijfde van de wereldhandel in olie doorheen gaat, zullen volgens Walsh niet alle problemen meteen opgelost zijn, wat betekent dat de prijzen voor vliegtuigbrandstof waarschijnlijk nog wel een tijdje hoog zullen blijven.<\/p>\n

Grote Europese luchtvaartmaatschappijen, waaronder Lufthansa en Air France-KLM, hebben al gewaarschuwd dat ze de hogere brandstofprijzen<\/a> aan passagiers.<\/p>\n

Naar schatting zal de luchtvaartindustrie in 2026 wereldwijd ongeveer 300 tot 320 miljoen ton vliegtuigbrandstof per jaar verbruiken, wat neerkomt op bijna 1 miljard liter per dag. Volgens de laatste cijfers verbruiken de landen van de Europese Unie ongeveer 46 miljoen ton vliegtuigbrandstof per jaar.<\/p>\n

Addis Abeba is de nieuwe Super Hub<\/h4>\n

Het luchtverkeer in het Midden-Oosten zelf is ook dramatisch gedaald als gevolg van de oorlog. Veel luchtvaartmaatschappijen vliegen bijvoorbeeld niet meer op Dubai, normaal gesproken een belangrijk knooppunt in de luchtvaart. Volgens Walsh zou dat snel kunnen veranderen zodra de situatie weer veilig is. \u201cIk denk dat de hubs in de Golfstaten zich zullen herstellen, en vrij snel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nu de traditionele grote drie - Dubai, Doha en Abu Dhabi - niet langer dienen als veilige havens voor transferpassagiers, zien we echter een snelle verschuiving naar andere hubs. De grootste winnaar is de luchthaven van Istanbul, die nu fungeert als de primaire toegangspoort tussen Oost en West.<\/p>\n

Delhi en Mumbai maken ook een enorme comeback als serieuze alternatieven voor transfers naar Zuidoost-Azi\u00eb en Australi\u00eb.<\/p>\n

Maar vooral de Ethiopische hoofdstad Addis Abeba positioneert zichzelf als de nieuwe \u2018Super Hub\u2019, waarbij Ethiopian Airlines slim het gat opvult dat is ontstaan door de instabiliteit in de Golfregio. In de eerste maanden van 2026 steeg het aantal beschikbare stoelen op de luchthaven met 31%.<\/p>\n

Bovendien is in januari begonnen met de bouw van een enorme nieuwe mega-luchthaven bij Addis Abeba, die uiteindelijk naar verwachting 110 miljoen passagiers per jaar zal verwerken.<\/p>\n
