{"id":184211,"date":"2026-04-09T12:40:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=184211"},"modified":"2026-04-09T11:50:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T09:50:03","slug":"jan-de-nul-launches-worlds-largest-cable-laying-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/04\/09\/jan-de-nul-launches-worlds-largest-cable-laying-vessels\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan De Nul lanceert 's werelds grootste kabelleggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Offshore energiebedrijf Jan De Nul heeft een nieuw high-performance schip van het volgende niveau gelanceerd: de William Thomson, een van de twee identieke onderzeese kabellegschepen die momenteel worden gebouwd.<\/p>\n<p>Beide schepen hebben een laadvermogen van 28.000 ton en een lengte van 215 meter. \u201cDit maakt ze tot de grootste, meest effici\u00ebnte en best presterende kabellegschepen in hun soort,\u201d zei Wouter Vermeersch, Directeur Subsea Cables Offshore Energy bij Jan De Nul.<\/p>\n<h4>Kosten verlagen<\/h4>\n<p>De twee nieuwe schepen zijn speciaal gebouwd om kabels te installeren, zowel in ondiep als in ultradiep water tot 4.000 meter. Dankzij hun grote laadcapaciteit kunnen ze langere kabels in \u00e9\u00e9n stuk aan boord nemen en langere afstanden overbruggen met zo min mogelijk onderzeese kabelverbindingen.<\/p>\n<p>In vergelijking met vergelijkbare schepen op de markt, zijn er minder retourreizen nodig om kabels te laden, waardoor de kosten dalen, de ecologische voetafdruk wordt geminimaliseerd en de kabelkwaliteit wordt verbeterd.<\/p>\n<h4>Eerste opdracht<\/h4>\n<p>Zusterschip Fleeming Jenkin werd in oktober 2025 te water gelaten en de oplevering staat gepland voor het laatste kwartaal van 2026. De William Thomson volgt binnenkort en zal in de eerste helft van 2027 operationeel zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Eenmaal operationeel kunnen beide schepen meteen aan de slag met hun eerste opdrachten. Hun eerste project is het 2GW-programma van TenneT, de netbeheerder voor Nederland en grote delen van Duitsland. Deze schepen zullen waarschijnlijk al jaren van tevoren volgeboekt zijn.<\/p>\n<h4>Offshore energie-oplossingen<\/h4>\n<p>Hiermee wordt een nieuwe generatie netaansluitingen voor offshore windparken ge\u00efntroduceerd, die elk tot twee gigawatt kunnen transporteren. Dat is meer dan het dubbele van de capaciteit van de huidige verbindingen. Voor dit project zullen beide schepen meer dan 2800 kilometer 525 kV gelijkstroomkabels installeren voor vier verschillende netverbindingen.<\/p>\n<p>In 2028 zal Jan De Nul ook een van deze nieuwe schepen inzetten om drie 220 kV wisselstroomkabels te installeren die het Princess Elisabeth Eiland met het vasteland verbinden. Dit energie-eiland, dat Jan De Nul in joint venture bouwt voor netbeheerder Elia, zal kabels bundelen van de tweede offshore windzone van Belgi\u00eb (Prinses Elisabethzone) en de interconnectie tussen de Noordzeelanden versterken.<\/p>\n<h4>Strategisch belangrijk<\/h4>\n<p>Jan De Nul investeert fors in de uitbreiding van zijn bestaande onderzeese kabelcapaciteit. Naast de twee kabellegschepen komen er nog drie schepen bij om ze te beschermen.<\/p>\n<p>Historisch gezien was Jan De Nul bekend voor baggeractiviteiten en landwinning, maar de laatste 15 jaar hebben ze een serieuze offshore energie divisie opgebouwd. Deze twee kabellegschepen zorgen voor een enorme capaciteitsuitbreiding.<\/p>\n<p>Windparken worden in hoog tempo gebouwd, maar de verbinding met de wal wordt de beperkende factor. Daarom zijn de nieuwe schepen strategisch zo belangrijk.
