Ford sluit het hoofdstuk van zijn \u201cstartup binnen een autofabrikant\u201d benadering van elektrificatie. De autofabrikant uit Detroit kondigde aan dat Doug Field, de voormalige topman van Tesla en Apple die in 2021 werd ingehuurd om de EV-transformatie te leiden, het bedrijf volgende maand vrijwillig verlaat.<\/p>\n

De stap maakt deel uit van Fords beslissing om de zelfstandige EV- en digitale organisatie, die Field moest opbouwen, op te heffen. In plaats daarvan zal de organisatie opgaan in een bredere eenheid die zich ook bezighoudt met productie, toeleveringsketen en programma's voor benzine- en hybride voertuigen.<\/p>\n

Universeel EV-platform<\/b><\/b><\/h4>\n

Toen Field bij Ford kwam, had de opkomst van Tesla elke traditionele automaker aan het denken gezet dat het culturele DNA van Silicon Valley het enige antwoord was voor de toekomst van de auto-industrie.<\/p>\n

Ford CEO Jim Farley steunde die overtuiging en herstructureerde het bedrijf in twee duidelijk gescheiden bedrijven: Model e voor elektrische voertuigen en Ford Blue voor zijn verbrandingslijn. Field runde Model e.<\/p>\n

Een indrukwekkende lijst van prestaties kenmerkt zijn ambtstermijn. Hij bracht Amerika's pick-uptruck op de markt, de F-150 Lightning, en was ook verantwoordelijk voor de Mustang Mach-E, die Ford een voorsprong gaf op het gebied van personenauto's op batterijen.<\/p>\n

Verder ontwikkelde hij het BlueCruise bestuurdersassistentieplatform, dat op schema ligt om in 2028 op niveau 3 eyes-off mogelijkheden te hebben. In zijn huidige vorm is handsfree rijden toegestaan op bepaalde stukken snelweg in Belgi\u00eb.<\/p>\n

Fiels hield ook vanaf het begin toezicht op de bouw van het Universal EV Platform. Het eerste voertuig gebouwd op die architectuur, een $30.000 midsize pick-up bestemd voor Louisville Assembly in 2027, maakt gebruik van LFP-batterijen, unibodyconstructie en aerodynamica die volgens Ford 15% superieur is aan die van een concurrerende pick-up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Echte prestaties<\/b><\/h4>\n

Dat zijn echte successen. Toch is het bredere Model e-experiment al enige tijd aan het ontrafelen. Ford heeft de batterij-versie van de F-150 Lightning geannuleerd en vervangen door een EREV range-extender variant. Een geplande elektrische SUV met drie rijen werd voor de productie in de ijskast gezet. Nu is de structuur van de afzonderlijke entiteiten zelf ontmanteld.<\/p>\n

Ford's Model e divisie verloor $4,8 miljard (\u20ac4,1 miljard) in 2025. Een fractie beter dan de $5,1 miljard (\u20ac4,3 miljard) die er in 2024 doorheen ging, maar nog steeds een onthutsend bedrag voor een divisie die $6,7 miljard (\u20ac5,7 miljard) aan inkomsten genereerde. Sinds de divisie in 2022 werd afgesplitst, heeft het meer dan $16 miljard (\u20ac13,6 miljard) aan verliezen geaccumuleerd.<\/p>\n

Een productieveteraan neemt het stuur over<\/b><\/b><\/h4>\n

De nieuwe organisatie heet Product Creation and Industrialization. De organisatie wordt geleid door COO Kumar Galhotra, die al lange tijd leiding geeft aan de productie en industrie van Ford. Het voegt EV-ontwikkeling, ontwerp en software samen met engineering, supply chain, cyclusplanning en voertuigproductie, die voorheen als aparte groepen werkten.<\/p>\n

Galhotra's doel is een scherpere en snellere besluitvorming nu Ford streeft naar 8% winstmarges in 2029. Dat doel gaat gepaard met concrete productverbintenissen: een opfrissing van 80% van het Noord-Amerikaanse portfolio en 70% van het wereldwijde portfolio qua volume binnen hetzelfde tijdsbestek.<\/p>\n

Ge\u00eblektrificeerde aandrijflijnen op bijna 90% van de wereldwijde merken tegen 2030, en bijgewerkte elektrische architecturen met over-the-air mogelijkheden op 90% van de voertuigen die het bedrijf verkoopt tegen het einde van het decennium.<\/p>\n

Wat komt hierna?<\/b><\/b><\/h4>\n

Field zelf gaf geen details over zijn volgende stap, hoewel hij aangaf van plan te zijn om wat hij bij Apple, Tesla en Ford heeft geleerd in iets nieuws te gieten.<\/p>\n

Zijn staat van dienst is moeilijk te ontkennen: hij hielp bij de ontwikkeling van de Tesla Model 3, hield toezicht op het geheime autoprogramma van Apple voordat het werd stopgezet en verlaat Ford nu met een productieklaar, goedkoop EV-platform dat nog niet bestond toen hij hier kwam.
