CEO Oliver Blume is van plan om de overcapaciteit in China en Europa te verminderen en tegelijkertijd fabriekssluitingen in Duitsland te voorkomen door middel van \u2018intelligente maatregelen\u2019. Deze maatregelen kunnen bestaan uit het verkopen van fabrieken aan andere industrie\u00ebn of aan (Chinese) concurrenten.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Porsche baas en nu VW Group CEO Oliver Blume beschrijft 2019 als het laatste jaar in een voorspelbare marktomgeving voor de Covid crisis. Op dat moment verkocht de Volkswagen Group wereldwijd ongeveer 11 miljoen voertuigen over al zijn merken, vertelde Blume in een interview aan het Duitse Manager Magazin.<\/p>\n<p>De groep had capaciteit opgebouwd voor ongeveer 12 miljoen eenheden per jaar, wat gemiddeld een solide bezettingsgraad opleverde, hoewel er verschillen bleven bestaan tussen individuele fabrieken.<\/p>\n<p>Sinds de Covid-crisis is de jaarlijkse verkoop van Volkswagen echter gedaald tot ongeveer negen miljoen voertuigen in sterk veranderde marktomstandigheden. Volgens de huidige plannen moet de groep de kosten nu met 20% verlagen.<\/p>\n<h4>Het nieuwe normaal<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cTarieven in de VS, immense concurrentiedruk in China, de krimpende Europese markt en nu de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten. Wie weet wat er nog gaat komen?\u201d vroeg Blume in het interview. \u201cDeze ontwikkelingen gaan niet zomaar voorbij. Dit is het nieuwe normaal. En we zullen opstaan om ze het hoofd te bieden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wat zijn producten betreft, is Blume van mening dat Volkswagen zeer concurrerend is. De recente operationele winstmarge van 2,8% is echter niet voldoende om grote investeringen uit eigen middelen te financieren. Blume is daarom van plan om de kosten aan te pakken om de groep veerkrachtiger te maken en beter te positioneren in een uitdagende omgeving, zelfs in een markt met lage groei.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOvercapaciteit is op de lange termijn niet houdbaar voor ons bedrijf. En in het huidige markt- en concurrentielandschap is de volumeplanning uit het verleden onrealistisch\u201d, aldus Blume. In China heeft de autofabrikant de capaciteit al met 1 miljoen voertuigen verminderd en in Europa zijn VW en Audi van plan om nog eens 1 miljoen voertuigen te schrappen.<\/p>\n<h4>De kosten van fabrieken verlagen in plaats van ze te sluiten<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoewel Blume in het interview geen specifieke locaties noemt die gevaar lopen en ook geen onderscheid maakt tussen verbrandings- en batterij-elektrische productie, is overcapaciteit binnen Volkswagen algemeen bekend in de industrie. Dit geldt niet alleen voor het hoofdkantoor in Wolfsburg, maar ook voor de batterij-elektrische autofabrieken in Emden en Zwickau, die niet op volle capaciteit draaien.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoewel de plannen vanaf eind 2024 al zijn aangepast, wordt verwacht dat Zwickau in de toekomst slechts \u00e9\u00e9n batterij-elektrisch model zal produceren. Voorheen waren zelfs vijf modellijnen van verschillende merken van de groep niet voldoende om de locatie volledig te benutten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Een soortgelijk beeld ontstaat bij Volkswagen Bedrijfswagens in Hannover, waar de resterende modellen, de Volkswagen ID. Buzz en de Volkswagen T7 Multivan de fabriek ook niet volledig kunnen benutten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn Duitsland zijn we momenteel samen met de ondernemingsraad de fabriekskosten aan het verlagen en boeken we vooruitgang zoals we nog nooit eerder bij Volkswagen hebben gezien,\u201d verklaarde Blume. \u201cDesondanks hebben we nog steeds last van overcapaciteit, die uiteindelijk veel geld kost. We moeten een geschikte manier vinden om dit aan te pakken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De CEO wil fabriekssluitingen voorkomen en noemt het voorbeeld van Osnabr\u00fcck, waar de autoproductie van VW volgens plan zal worden be\u00ebindigd, maar de locatie zelf zal worden behouden. \u201cWe onderhandelen met bedrijven in de defensie-industrie die deze fabriek kunnen gebruiken en de werknemers kunnen behouden. Dat bedoel ik met intelligent. We moeten trajecten ontwikkelen om onze eigen overcapaciteit op dezelfde manier te verminderen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Onlangs kondigde Bastian Ernst, een Duits CDU-parlementslid, aan dat het wel eens de Isra\u00eblische defensiespecialist Rafael zou kunnen zijn die Osnabr\u00fcck zal overnemen. Tot 2025 maakte Ernst deel uit van het management van Dynamit Nobel Defense (DND), de Duitse dochteronderneming van Rafael, die het antitankwapen \u2018Panzerfaust\u2019 produceert.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens de lokale krant Osnabr\u00fccker Zeitung zou de fabriek worden omgebouwd voor de productie van onderdelen voor het \u2018Iron Dome\u2019 luchtverdedigingssysteem. Ernst denkt dat het om zware vrachtwagens en raketlanceerinstallaties zal gaan.<\/p>\n<p>Blume sluit de verkoop van een fabriek aan een Chinese concurrent die wil uitbreiden naar Europa en EU-tarieven wil vermijden door lokaal te produceren, niet uit. Hij tempert echter de verwachtingen voor een dergelijke deal. De fabrieken van VW worden als duur beschouwd vanwege hun bezettingsgraad en collectieve arbeidsovereenkomsten. En voor Chinese bedrijven zijn \u201cfabriekskosten natuurlijk zeer relevant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Blume denkt dat een soort \u2018coproductie\u2019 met Chinese fabrikanten interessant kan zijn om de overcapaciteit in zijn Europese fabrieken te verhelpen. Tegelijkertijd ziet hij mogelijkheden om ook \u2018Chinese VW-producten\u2019 in Europa te verkopen. Zoals we verder in dit artikel aangeven, wil de VW Group het aantal modellen wereldwijd verminderen, maar is <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/04\/22\/volkswagen-arrives-in-beijing-with-three-concepts-to-fence-off-chinese-dominance\/\">lancering van een aanzienlijk aantal nieuwe modellen in China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Modellen verlagen, winstgevendheid verbeteren<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoals gezegd is de VW Group van plan om kosten te besparen door het aantal modellen te verminderen. Wereldwijd biedt de Duitse groep momenteel ongeveer 150 verschillende modellen aan. Volgens Blume zal dit aantal in de toekomst naar verwachting dalen tot onder de 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe moeten dit strategisch plannen voor alle merken, regio's en segmenten. Voor aandrijflijnen zullen we ons richten op regionale markten. Voor uitrustingsvarianten zullen we ons aanbod nog meer focussen,\u201d legde de CEO uit.<\/p>\n<p>Als je de <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/04\/22\/volkswagen-arrives-in-beijing-with-three-concepts-to-fence-off-chinese-dominance\/\">lawine van modellen<\/a>, Aangezien het merk VW en de groep als geheel plannen in China (onder het VW- en Audi-logo, maar ook Jetta en AUDI), zal de vermindering van het modelnummer hoogstwaarschijnlijk elders moeten plaatsvinden.<\/p>\n<p>Toch werkt de VW Group ook hard aan zijn betaalbare EV-segmenten, met auto's zoals de ID. Polo, ID. Cross, Cupral Raval en Skoda Epiq staan op het punt gelanceerd te worden, en een nog kleinere, goedkopere ID.
